i have just bought a bedford diesel 330 engine to put into my 1954 A model SWB, it is an old engine, but runs as sweet as a nut, can crowbar, advise me as to when bedford 330 engines changed from cylinder head studs to bolts,my engine manual only goes back to 1976, and they had bolts fitted then, it has an in line injection pump (cav), and has the bulge at the back of the head/block for the two O rings in the water system so it is definetly a 330,also,did these early 330,s have studs about one foot long surrounded by water like the very first 300,s, or short studs, screwed straight into the top of the cylinder block, ,bigal 20.
Hi Big Al,
From memory the early 300 / 330 had the studs from the block water jacket, surrounded by coolant. (Used to corrode away)
The later 330’s that I ran all had head Bolts and DPA rotary pumps, I ran these from 1971 onwards. Never had a 330 with a Minimec pump always DPA type.
Had some TK’s with 380 engines (downrated 466) these had DPA rotary pumps. Then moved onto KM’s and KG’s, the early ones had Minimec pumps and the later ones DPA rotary pumps.
Cant recall the 330 with the coolant O ring seals at the rear of the block, only the 380 / 466 engine. (I stand to be corrected on this, was 40+ years ago)
Good luck with the transplant.
from what i have heard av, the 330, 381, and 466, had end to end water flow,i am not certain on this, crowbar might know.
this engine,av760, has a cav in line pump with pneumatic governor, just like the old thames 4d engines. i am basically trying to find out what year this engine might be,as we cannot find an engine mumber.
That is an early engine, vacuum pipes to to the intake Venturi with the butterfly type throttle.
Give these people a call, chap called Dave, don’t know if he is still there but he knew his stuff.

AFIK Dave has now retired. I am nor sure if Martin is still there, but he was about 18 months ago. The call is still worthwhile even if neither Dave nor Martin are still there. If that is so ask for parts dept anyway and they should be able to give you a number for Graham who is now IIRC a partner in a company in Hastings which specialises in elderly parts. The switchboard lady is very helpful as well, she is used to getting calls about Bedford parts and giving out new numbers. All three of these names really knew their stuff.

anyone interested, look in past and present pictures, to see video of this engine running,i think it is titled"bedford engine in landrover".
sorry, it is past, present, and in between pictures.
We had a 1961 new with 300 cu in
1962 new with 330 cu in inline pump
1963 with 330 cu in rotary pump
Thereafter rotary pump
So your engine is most likely 1962 when 330 was introduced with inline pump
thank,s for the info carl,bigal20
according to the bedford engine manual from 1973, all 330 engines since the first one was made are prefixed by the letter J, on my engine, the letters are stamped I /K/J/R/S/VA/1205/SE, this means nothing to me, so i think a phone call to dittons next week.
hi, cav, i have spoken to graham, and the numbers on the block mean nothing to him,he think,s it is a early 330 short stud, but says he can identify it exactly when i give him the numbers off the injection pump.bigal.
The Bedford 300 and 330 both had the End To End flow on the coolant that is easy to spot at the back of the cylinder head, the easy way to identify a 300 from a 330 is by looking at the Oil Filter head, the 300 is bolted with 2 bolts and the 330 is bolted with 4 bolts, to look at the Vee belts as a guide you can be caught out as the pulley set can be swapped, both engines look very near identical but inside things are somewhat different, the biggest item is the 330 has Dry Liners fitted the 300 is just Parent Block without renewable liners and a smaller bore size, so always look at the Oil Filter Head before you gauge what the Engine is.

p.s. I would expect a 1962 engine to be a 300 series item.
Hello Bigal,
The engine number you posted is for a 1965 300 short motor, SE is Service Exchange. The original engine
would have been 1963 or earlier with the inline pump, they went over to the DPA in mid 1963. Your engine will be
short stud with push fit cast iron liners. The injector pump for a 300 will be CAV AAL6D75/147GRPE17 or GRPE31.

thank,s bedfordandy, i have two engines, the good one, injection pump number is 4715620, the siezed one, injector pump number is 4715621, both cav.bigal.
Hello Bigal, Those injector pump numbers don’t mean anything to me, they might be the CAV part number
or the despatch number. There should be a blue plate on the pump with AAL6D etc. In the case of no blue plate
on the pump & no engine number it would be a cylinder head off job to see what the engine is.
The engine number on these engines is on the right hand sump flange either at the front below the dynamo
or half way back by the dipstick, not unusual for none to be there though. If you find a “1” it is a 300, if
there is a “5” it will be a 330.
I am guessing you have been buying some bargain engines on ebay, there have been a few over the last
couple of months, they don’t usually come up very often. I was tempted myself but i have enough stuff
to trip over everyday as it is!
