Where was it, was it any good, when was it pulled down? Was it where the brown sign for Ripon Cathedral now stands?
I remember stopping overnight there with Dad in a Foden S83 when I was a lad thirty years ago (41), bringing reels of paper from Blyth to Salford.
About a mile south of the Quernhow cafe, on the opposite (southbound) side. Was pulled down donkey’s years ago - we used to use it when we were on tippers, and that was well over 40 years ago. The empty site was still there, though, right up to building the new road in the last few years.

I remember the food was good in there, the steak and chips was excellent.
used to stop there myself, i used to prefer it to the bistro which was open all night and you could never get any sleep with all the night trunkers tending to stop there.
Ahh - the Bistro - strange woman if ever there was one!
Then of course, there’s Londonderry Lodge…

The Bistro was a dump, mucky hole. The tables at night were never cleared and the staff were errrrrrrr - well the same. Some of our trunkers used it but I used to pass it and call in a lay-by for remnants of me flask and snap at night. The other bloody hole was at Rainton - Windmill was it? - another scruffy dump at night.
Anyone who used the A1 in this area in the seventies will remember the kamikaze chickens from the “Bedale”. They were always escaping from the rear garden to forage on the road. I think they were after the “roadkill” of dead insects from passing motors. I went in one day and asked Lex where they were, he just looked at me and said, what do you think■■? Regards Kev.
It was a decent stopping point although I did prefer Penrith or The Punch Bowl for the banter.
Mick Harrington was the transport manager for Chapman Sheilds in Hull and his son was the last one to run it before they flattened it, it was a great shame as there were not so many decent places left. At that time the Quernow was still a good cafe and worth stopping, now they shouldn’t be allowed to feed swine.
I remember the Bedale Hunt from the 50s when it was a busy pub, On a sunday when drivers left Newcastle area heading south it was a fave stop for a pint & a sandwich, usually roast beef, which was very nice, The next stop for the real drinkers was the Tally Ho at Donny, I remember one Monday morning heading down south & stopping at the Red House Café for Breaky & there was two drivers fast asleep in their cabs, and both were loaded for London, Of course you could get away with it in those days, That is providing your old motor wasn’t fiited with the old Servis Recorder Clock, As the likes of some north east firms had, Regards Larry.
I used to stop there regular early 90,s overnight and when passing for a meal. I remember the owner was called Brian and if you were away early doors he used to leave tea and coffee etc in the toilet/wash block out the back. Decent place place to stop good grub and good pint far better than the manky derry
Can anybody remember the poor J.D.Crawford driver who, one Christmas ,was still ■■■■■■ and set off northbound!!! On the southbound carriageway,I think he got about 11 miles,
