hi im thinking about becoming a owner/driver what sort of prices are 8x4 tippers on hire purchase or lease hire etc and what other costs would i have, would it be worth doing it?
Karl, I think you need to have a good look into this, there are so many factors involved which are dependent on what work you will be doing and where you are.
Why not start by making a list of what costs you think are involved then do some research into each cost.

This is the sort of thing you learn on the Operator’s CPC course.
i know there will be truck hire/rental, insurance, fuel, operator licence, servicing is servicing usally included in the rental?
would i have to do a operator cpc course?
My recommendation would be to get a job as an employed driver on an 8 wheeler and get talking to some if the O/D’s on there. They will probably tell you that it’s crap at the moment due to the recession and price of diesel etc etc. I would tend to agree as I know a lot of lads on 8 wheel muck away/Tarmac work and the job seems to be dead round us. Most days they are at home for dinner time and if you have tax/insurance etc to pay on a wagon of your own that ain’t the recipe of success.

Basically you can get whatever deal you want, the more that is included then the more the charges would be.
You don’t have to take a CPC but if you don’t then you have to nominate someone who has one to be your Transport Manager.
