BBC 1 Close call on camera

Broadcast date 04/01/18 at 11.45 am to 12.15 pm for those that can catch up later.
A car pulls out in front of a Lgv causing the Lgv to turn over, the truck is on fire, the driver trapped upside down unconscious.
The female car driver that crossed two Chevron areas casually drives off without stopping as if nothing happened .

He was doing 60mph too, if you believe everything they tell you…

She was caught up with and found guilty of careless driving, fined £200 and endorsed with 9 points. Which personally I think is ridiculous. She should have been banned from driving for a year at least and forced to take an extended driving course before a retest.

Completely oblivious to any other traffic on the road…

Rather similar to the incident shown on “Dashcam TV” on the BBC a few times where the female car driver does the same causing the HGV to swerve and roll over.Once again the car driver continued as if nothing had happened.I learned very early in my HGV driving life not to swerve for a car for this very reason.A police officer told me that it is not an accident if I was the only one involved.
In another incident a few years ago involving tanker near Wetherby a female driver(a vet?)joined the A1M southbound without looking over her shoulder and failed to either see or hear the lorry resulting in her car being pushed sideways down the motorway for some distance out of sight of the lorry driver.Police found no reason to charge the female with any driving offence.

@13mins on the iplayer. Horrendous driving.

Think this is the one you are referring to, happened at Wetherby.

Experience must tell you that you brake, but don’t swerve unless you’re a goner if you don’t. As an hgv driver you’d surely need to have some understanding of kinetic energy.

Was the driver rescued ? I hope so.

Just watched it now. Interesting about the windscreen - I saw a Merc that had been on it’s side and fire or ambulance had cut out a section of roof beside the sunroof for access, given that the windscreen was already cracked, I’d have thought that would be the simplest way in, are they really tough to knock out, or risk of making more sharp hazards in the cab perhaps?

It’s very easy to say don’t swerve but when you find yourself in that situation you don’t have a lot of control over what your brain wants to do…which is head for the gap or clear bit of road

I wrote this once and must have pressed the wrong button :unamused: Anyway, I’ve had more than one instance where I could have swerved but if I was driving a bus, my first thought was not to chuck passengers off their seats and in a semi, I didn’t want to roll it. Having said that, I can’t watch it from here because the good old beeb have blocked it… unless someone puts it on you tube.

Having seen it I doubt the truck would have stopped in time, probably not much more than a trucks length between them when it was obvious what was happening, but a big escape area to the left to avoid the car.
The best way I can describe it, is the car wandered (wandered being a better description, as it seemed the person behind the steering wheel wasn’t really aware of their surroundings) into the path of the truck while they were joining the motorway crossing a wide set of chevrons in the process, instead of continuing along the slip road they were on.

Windscreens are glued in most have to be off the road a good 12hrs to allow the bond to cure.
If you have a rubber surround like older car / truck windscreens they’ll pop out no problem .

Just watched this :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

£200 fine & 9 points :frowning: And why the f**k is that careless driving & not dangerous?

Personally, as soon as that car started to cross the solid white line at the speed they where going, I would of been looking for an escape route, if there wasn’t one the brakes would of been on, pressing the horn would of been the last thing on my mind.
You have to have your wits about you doing this job, as every other driver on the road is an idiot.
Hope the driver is ok, and puts this down to experience.

Not really dangerous, just stupid driving, by a stupid driver.

Not dangerous? She pulled across the chevrons at a stupidly slow speed into the path of an artic. How the hell is that not dangerous■■?

A danger to other road users and got off very lightly! Disgraceful bit of driving! I think the trucker was slow to react and should have got on the horn sooner and held his line whilst braking as hard as possible.

A good 5-6 seconds to see the car moving across before needing to take avoiding action, plenty of time to just take the foot off the pedal, maybe find a gap to the right - depends if anything was immediately behind the white van, which would have passed quicker if he’d eased off. Shout a few obscenities and carry on with your day with a couple of seconds lost.
