Read in tonight’s local rag that R.G.Bassett Transport from Tittensor have been bought by Bargh(sp) the milk tanker people.
According to one of the Bassett family it’s just a case of all the family left in the business wish to retire.
What a shame end of an era

Shame that, I loved Liquorice allsorts.
Bargh’s have just bought a fair size plot of land in longton by the fire station used to be the old twyfords factory they are in the process of levelling it.
Bassetts goes back to 1897, that’s sometime to be in this business.
When I worked for the Wild Group in the '70’s, we often ran into Bassetts or Davey’s, we all did similar work.
I didn’t think Bassetts did continental work, they took over Berresfords but I’m not sure they did any of their European work.
I do know when I was in engineering in the '90’s, I was stripping out a factory close to the East German border to bring back here for Wedgewood’s at Barlaston. I asked Bassetts if they could do the job and they were pleased to give me a price.
First truck on site was a Bassett’s, the other loads were subbed out.
passed my class 1 and 2 with them
Yard will be worth a few bob for housing, sad to see another long established name consigned to the past

The site at Longton is to replace the existing yard at Endon, supposed to be in there before the end of the year.

Bassetts is going to be run as a standalone brand, so will probably continue to be run from Tittensor.
Wonder if they’ll continue to run the driving school.

My neighbours lad currently drives for Bargh at Ashbourne (running daily down to Acton) but the whole shebang is moving to the new place so he will be looking for another job nearer home.
Pete.

At least it’s not a Iveco…
Travelled miles with my Dad when I was a kid in one of them old Commers.
It was a two stroke (they had their own smell about them, some of the real old timers will know what I mean) and flames used to come out of the exhaust when pulling uphill.

The exhaust box that ran across the front and came out the side was best …especially in the dark ! The old mans used to frighten me to death .
Very sad indeed, I too passed my class 2 (with Pete) and Class 1 (with Brian) many moons ago.
I imagine they’ll keep the training school open if it’s making money. As I’m sure it must be, or Bassett’s wouldn’t have kept it going so long.
Also isn’t it the only test centre for miles around these days?
