Basque Driving Ban Changes

All three regional governments within the autonomous region of the Basque area of Spain have seen themselves obliged to alter the restrictions applicable to goods vehicles transiting their region on Sundays and bank holidays due to a sentence passed by the Spanish courts in answer to litigation brought by various Spanish transport associations.

The changes create corridors of dual-carriageways and/or motorways for vehicles which wish to pass through the Basque region on Sundays and bank holidays and they are as follows: the A8, A68, A15, N1, N1A, N240, N622, A1, and the BI625 between Basauri and Arrigorriaga.

There are certain exceptions and new restrictions such as it is forbidden to use the A8 from Bilbao (Erletxes exit), the A15, N1 and the N1A heading towardsFrance on Sundays and Basque/Spanish bank holidays although this restriction will be lifted when the Basque holiday coincides with a normal working day in France when vehicles will be allowed to continue their journey to France.

Heavy traffic will also be banned from using the A8 and the N634 between Basauri and Cantabria between 09.00 and 15.00 saturdays and between Cantabria and Bilbao from 15.00 till 22.00 on Sundays.

That sounds like a bit of good news for a change, although I don’t generally drive on Sundays

It is a shame that they haven’t included the short stretch of the N121a that is within the Basque region though, as this is my preferred route in and out of Irun if I am going to Madrid or all points East of there

They are starting to discourage trucks from using the N121a.
You will have noticed that is no longer signposted as you come up to Pamplona.
This is because the plans have been approved for the widening of the last stretch of the N121a and during the widening they will probably ban heavy vehicles from using it until they have finished.
