Basic Trucks

Very true are lot usually let them break then don’t repair

Dipper_Dave:
Call me a ■■■■■■■■■■■■ but air-con is pretty much a standard requirement for me.
In fact I usually ask at the interview if its on the trucks as due to its removal being a false economy it speaks volumes about the company if it’s not included.

I agree with the ■■■■■■■■■■■■, firms that remove air con systems are the firms to avoid.

My aircon would be switched off, can’t abide the fake atmosphere it gives even in shops. Not overly keen on air seats either, just an old fashioned sprung one would do me fine (but not wedged up with wood for years like my old Foden one was!) and I would like a radio for company but wouldn’t bother with a CD as I never play them at home anyway! Power steering would be nice as well, that’s me satisfied!

Pete.

My favourite driving seat was the Bostron Viking, had that wheel where you set it to your weight. I believe that ex Smiths Foden Windrush drove had one.
Our Isuzu has similar, and I think Hinos have them too. Talking of seats why do only certain Daf seats have the lock off button for the air suspension?
I agree with Windrush’ comments about air con. Only one of our trucks has it and I tend to only use it to immediately cool the cab down, then switch it off and open the windows.

No heated mirrors is the thing I would have a problem with, heated mirrors aren’t a luxury, they are a vital safety issue on a misty day.

I used to tie an old pair of pants around the mirror arm ,worked quite well keeping the n/s lens clean.

My mate has just got a new scan 8 wheeler with no air con.
I was quite surprised at that now days.

I’ve never driven a truck with air con. I thought that’s what the big windows were for.

Drove some billy basic scania with a manual drivers window and elec passenger. Also even on the streamline spec R Series of today you get an elec passenger mirror and manual drivers side. Talk about being cheap.

Bugger all wrong with that, things not fitted can’t go expensively wrong.

Well said that man , when will the penny drop by operators , manufacturers , etc etc , but I am always suspicious that the makers force this mostly unnecessary equipment on operators with the hope it will help sell motors , or perhaps if all this equipment starts to go wrong then an expensive visit to the dealers is on the cards .

Here’s a thought, maybe the penny isn’t dropping because what you think is true isn’t…trucks are more reliable than ever. We’ve had a serious amount of electronics in trucks for over 20 years now and in general it’s all keeps working just fine.

It’s quite often a massively expensive job to repair a broken truck air-con system. Mine has never worked because the air-con radiator has a leak and it is buried so deep that half the truck would have to come apart to replace it. For the sake of the half-dozen days a year it gets hot in the UK I’d sooner open the windows than spend £1,000+ on getting it fixed.

That’s the attitude they but I do prefer not to be subjected to 70db plus for most of the day then there’s pollution we do alot of town work and heavy lifting. Could save a claim for hearing loss in the future.

This should be on the options list from new…pair of skids for n/s mirror…box ticked… :grimacing:

Someone said to me the other day about our TGM being basic; I pointed out that although that end of the truck was, the crane and tipper is a Palfinger/Thompson combination. I’d rather have that than an R cab at the front with a HMF crane bolted to a Fruehauf or Massey Maxim tipper.

couldn’t agree more!! :sunglasses: :sunglasses: :sunglasses:

My suspension seat is an Isringhausen (2 horizontal springs and a shock absorver) and it is installed on a Fiat Ducato van.
Two questions:

  1. Considering you’ve got a seat with rotative weighing 45kg applied to the suspension kit, when you’re adjusting the weight on the supension, should you consider only the driver’s weight or must you add 45kg?
  2. Also, what are the symptoms of a problem with the shock absorver or the springs?

Thanks for your help.

Well our TGM is still low cost to maintain and run, in comparisson to our CF which is showing it’s age now (09 plate).
Since Xmas the CF has had nearly a grand spent on the EBS system (two different faults). The sunroof started to leak (£300) for a new seal plus labour.
I’ve noticed that normal air pressure is only around 6-7 bar whereas it used to be 8-9. This means a lot of shunting will cause the air pressure to drop too low.
Finally the auto tailgate is not to be trusted. It often misses the tailgate and simply closes up against the body. I would rather have a proper tailgate with a pin that I know is shut.
Oh yes the rotating beacons packed up just after Xmas (done now) and the reversing camera has been bust for ages. Not missing that as they’re a pain in the dark.

I hate poverty spec motors, I can understand On multidrop where your in and out all day but I spent 10 hours a day in my motor and having things like air con make a big difference.

When I sat on the Isringhausens I found that if the shock absorber played up you’d go up too fast on bumps and hit the stop, which I found was worse than going down to the stop too fast. Is that your symptoms ?

I see most of you guys arent agency drivers as having half a working truck is a good sign and if the brakes work thats even better!

I reckon post Brexit we could see some Chinese built trucks over here, then we’ll see basic. Sinotruck were meant to be coming with 8wheelers but that’s gone quiet. Just like the Euro 6 Hino.

Air con is never off in my truck! Never have misted windows even in wet weather with wet kit in the cab. I’m sure some don’t realise it does more than just cool.
