Barton Transport was for many years the largest private bus company in the UK and still were at the time when they jumped on the ME bandwagon. I don’t remember them doing freight transport before that, never mind international, but if they did I think it would have been mainly short distance work. I know they were never on my horizon as a job prospect, and I’ve worked for many of the Nottingham hauliers.
Don’t know why I still ignored them even after branching out, perhaps I never really took them seriously.
The Barton family was much in evidence and, I suppose still are, though the bus company has long been merged with Trent, their big rival between Nottingham and Derby. Where I lived, at Bramcote, there was a bus past the front door every 10 minutes I think it was, Trent and Barton alternately.
Apart from the Bartons in the bus company, one member ran the tacho service in premises he rented from the company in Beeston and another was a swimming instructor. :unamused: I think there were too many for the pie.

Bartons used to run Fiats.I was in Teheran customs for a week with a couple of smashing guys in 1976.I’ll dig out some pics I have.
Back soon.

Back already.
A couple of pics of me and two of Bartons drivers in Teheran customs. We spent a week drinking chai and jawing.

Paul Barton is the Tacho geezer, he is still there, running out of their old bus depot in Beeston, the site is now an “industrial estate”, called Barton Court IIRC, Paul is a nice bloke, very straight, don`t ask for an upgarde on your limiter FFS   :unamused:

I remember them running Aki Borderers IIRC to the M/E, proper men, not the ponces you meet today

Yes Paul, I remember now, and the swimming instructor was Alf. He performed an amazing feat by getting my waterphobic wife to tread water in the deepend after a couple of sessions. Blotted his copybook a touch later though by abandonning her from time to time to visit different parts of the pool to attend to other ‘half hour one to one’ students that he had on the go. :smiling_imp:
