I happened to mention to a tutor on a speed awareness course about a decision in Ireland to allow banned drivers to drive to work and back.
He explained that the same will be introduced later this year in the UK. I have no reason to doubt him, But surely this would have been headline news.
This appears to be aimed at office workers. How would this affect a lorry or coach driver?
I would have thought a ban is a ban and that seems an unfair system. What is wrong with public transport to get to work?
If they are stupid enough to lose their licence they do not deserve any favours.
The way it would affect LCV and PCV drivers is they could drive to work and then have to drive home again!!!

Is this the sunday morning wind up
No it isn’t a sunday morning wind up. It has been well publicised in Ireland, I’ve not heard about the same system being introduced in the UK.
As for using public transport, Many places are very rural and have little or no public transport.
You might be able to convince us it’s true if you posted a web link

True that ,i have had a search and can find plenty about the relaxing of the drink driving rules but nothing about relaxing the banned driving rules

The hours we work dont support using public transport…
If for example I did I would have to leave an hour or so earlier than I do now, take the bus to the train station, train to Reading then another bus to the DC, but then what happens if I finish before public transport, I’m not risking my life in a Reading taxi
Utter bull.No such thing.
Bad things as there are many, about the laws in this country, but there has been a huge change in attitudes towards drink driving. It is no longer socially acceptable to have a few pints and drive, as it was in days gone by.
The courts do come down strongly on drunk drivers, and, only in extreme cases may they consider putting off a driving ban.
Thats not to say we
re all socialising with Ballygowan spring water, and driving home either. Some people will not learn.
On the drive to work thing though Phil, tell the tutor it`s bull, and you made a mistake.
Would be an interesting conversation with insurance company. Yea I am banned but!

I wasn’t refering solely to drink drive bans, There are many other reasons people get a disqualification.
But as you refered to drink driving. Have you heard about the drink drive permits in Ireland?

I know ,most regular insurance companies won’t touch a driver that has completed his ban ,trying to find one that would insure you while you are banned …except for the drive to and from work(how would that even be enforced) … would be fun and make working a pointless exercise given the cost .
Utter bull
Someone pulling your leg there was a time if you got banned for 1 year you was able to get your licence back after 6 months those days are finished now and the levels for drink driving are 0.2 as the uk is 0.8

it’s 0.2 for inexperienced drivers, 0.5 for experienced drivers.
On the drivers cpc module 3 health & safety uk states that the limit is 0.8 across the board who am I to split hairs you don’t drink and drive as for been able to drive when banned that rule was in the 80s and it was for the farmers and there tractors
Section 49 of the Road Traffic Act 1961 as inserted by Section 10 of the Road Traffic Act 1994 created four separate drink driving offences in Ireland. From 28 October 2011, these traffic offences are replaced.
The new offences, introduced by Section 4 of the Road Traffic Act 2010, reduce the drink driving alcohol limits for all drivers. They also differentiate between experienced drivers and new drivers — those with learner permits or who hold a driving licence for 2 years or less, or have no valid licence/permit. Lower alcohol limits apply to new drivers than those that apply to experienced drivers. The lower alcohol limits applying to new drivers also apply to drivers of buses, lorries, trailers, work vehicles, taxis and other public service vehicle drivers.
The new offences are as follows:
-An offence of driving or attempting to drive a mechanically propelled vehicle in a public place while under the influence of an intoxicant to such an extent as to be incapable of having proper control of the vehicle.
-An offence of driving or attempting to drive a mechanically propelled vehicle in a public place while there is present in your body a quantity of alcohol such that, within 3 hours after so driving or attempting to drive, the concentration of alcohol in your blood exceeds a concentration of:
-50 milligrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood for experience drivers
- 20 milligrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood for other drivers
-An offence of driving or attempting to drive a mechanically propelled vehicle in a public place while there is present in your body a quantity of alcohol such that, within 3 hours after so driving or attempting to drive, the concentration of alcohol in your urine exceeds a concentration of:
- 67 milligrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of urine for experienced drivers
- 27 milligrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of urine for other drivers
-An offence of driving or attempting to drive a mechanically propelled vehicle in a public place while there is present in your body a quantity of alcohol such that, within 3 hours after so driving or attempting to drive, the concentration of alcohol in your breath exceeds a concentration of: - 22 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath for an experience driver
- 9 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath for other drivers

Jeez have another read mate!
I stand corrected Phil, on the reasons for banning(other than only for d/d).
Enlighten me on the drink drive permits though.
Not a wind up ! I heard this news story on BBC news a couple of months ago, they started it in certain rural areas of Ireland, in one county they even issued permits for country folk to be allowed over the legal limit because they live so far from the pubs and the only way to socialise is to drive to a pub Each car would have a drink drive pass on the windscreen. They allow banned drivers to drive to remote work areas over here also, but they are not allowed off route for any reason.
As for the lorry or bus driver question … whats the point ? if they are allowed to drive to work that would be as far as they got, to then permit them to drive a truck or bus would be mindless They should however be allowed to drive to work… then sit there and stare at the vehicle
