Ballast

I’ve a a- frame that has 2 pieces of concrete on it ( one either side) , one weighs 2.8 tons, 1 weighs 8.8 tons, I’ve got 2 pieces of 3 ton ballast on the apx 3 ton piece of concrete side of the tri.the 2 pieces strapped to the frame are thesame length but the 9t piece looks about 3 times as tall.
Does this sound ok?, if they were the same height I’d fill comfortable , I know in theory the weight with the ballast is apx the same , but the high centre of gravity of the piece ( 9t) is what is worrying me .
Nb I’m after advice as its all new to me , I don’t need a lecture on packing in truck driving , I’ve a interview my mates got me on fridges , if I get that you won’t hear another peep off me , thanks in advance for any advice . Ta

Have you got a pic - I not getting the description .

wow… just wow :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

Should be ok a would imagine soind weird the way its loaded. If it was me and i thought it looked secure enough i would run with it and just be a wee bit steady in the corners and all will be fine just trust yourself.

put extra straps on until your satisfied its safe doesn’t matter how many it’s your decision ,cross them angle them etc ,when your happy go with it if your not then dont

Thanks Colin, it strapped to frame , then I’ve strapped it all to chassis , so it won’t fall off , but I’m worried it’s all going to fall over ( we did get round a round about though ) , it’s just you’ve a bloody great piece of concrete one side of frame and what looks a little piece the othe , let’s hope this ballast works.
Hopefully I’ll get back on fridges , not much to worry about with a fridge full of bananas.

Is the Ballast on the side of the frame which the lighter of the two pieces is ? On the frame ? ( if it is on the same side of lighter piece it would have been put on to balance the weight on the load ) or is the ballast over the swan neck to put some weight over the pin to give u more traction .

Are the weights on pieces ? They usually are depending on where u have picked this up from ? Also u should have been trained or inducted to pull such loads like this as they’ve had them come off !
I know there not ideal and they look terrible or ideal ! Daunting at first is the word but usually if secured well and correctly they don’t ride badly just take your time they ride better than u think I personally find they ride better than a full load of beer or a loaded liquid tanker !

In the end if your the driver its your licence your load if your not happy u ask the question or tell the powers be that your not happy or confident with it I’m sure u will get some sense out of the lot I work for hopefully . If u have any other issues or problems drop me a pm .

I’m not worried abt them falling off( there hel on with 4x10 t product straps , I’ve put on 4 x 10 t traveling straps , 2 x 5 t traveling straps
It’s that fact that even so the ballast makes weight even on both sides of frame/ tri one side of frame has a piece 3 x as high as other side , I just wondered , worried does height, high centre of gravity one side of frame make a difference when cornering

Yes greggo there on the bed ( strapped ) on the lighter side , the weight should be abt even 3t product, 2x 3 t ballast = 9 t product , it’s the height of the 9 t product , opposed to the 3 t product , 2x ballast that worries me , one side has a lot of height up high whereas the othe side is low down.
They did say it’s how it’s done , but as I’m not used to this type of work it just doesn’t look right looking from rear of tri .
Thanks for help , can’t pm on pre- mod , this last week or two I’ve realised my limitations , I’m outside my comfort zone , credit to you lot for doing it , but hopefully I’ll get job back on fridges , I felt relaxed and happy doing them , I’m not sleeping well , need a change , look after yourself

I didn’t think wow when I saw it , I thought oh no, why me , haven’t you got a couple of bits of concrete on a flat bed , I’ve only just recovered from being asked to pick a crane up( think it was bits ) , luckily I don’t pocess any chains

I have to admit I found frame loads abit daunting at first especially when I was given a load shower cubicle walls to deliver to a custerdy suite we were doing they weren’t even on a frame they were literally stood on step frame trailer and nearly 16ft high ! . Of late I’ve not really been doing many frame loads as we haven’t got much work on them out where I genuinely work out off I’ve just been building Reading and up and down to Southampton at a guess u have been based out of EIP there frame loads can be very varied with a lot of different loads .

Think the crane parts aren’t to bad compared to some of the concrete products I have to admit I’ve not had the pleasure yet though been told to day I’m getting some chains to play with ! though I have used them before on plant/piling gear but it’s been a few years .

Hope whatever u decide to do works out for u and makes u more relaxed in your job .

I hope you do for your own sanity. Its not good working stressed out all the time about what you’re pulling and what your next load is going to be.

As much as we take the mick out of you I don’t think any of us have liked reading how bad you’ve been feeling lately about the job.

Hopefully I’ll get back on fridges , not much to worry about with a fridge full of bananas.

dozy was it you I saw on the A75 on Friday about 14:00 on the Annan side of Dumfries - Scania low cab with a step frame with an Aframe with a piece or two of concrete on ?

Hijacking by a gang of starving chimpanzees?

Fridges have their own challenges doze, as far as your current concrete slab adventures go as long as the ballast weights are correct you wont really notice any higher centre of gravity as there isnt much of a change due to the weight still being on the bed. COG is affected slightly due to the mass and structure of the load but just tickle her a long slow and steady on corners and you will be fine.

Looking forward to future threads on temp set points, defrosted loads and them noisy fridge motors keeping you awake…
