I aggree truck is broke its there problem not yours i personally would have left card in waited around for a few hours 3/4 then when no sign of been able to do my days work legally arrange accommadation for the night head for the pub for a few hours get my nights sleep and start the next day as another days work if the customer has to wait for the load so what its not your prob if the company you worked for wanted to send the load on urgently so it would be on time why didnt they arrange another unit.
Remember the company aint stupid i am sure they have experienced breakdowns before and know how long it takes for repair and with trucks notthing is ever black and white so if they wanted the load there on time they should have sorted something out thats tm s fault they didnt so why should you cover and break laws for them
just my thoughts but each to there own

I’ve mentioned this twice on this thread but no-one has commented on it…How many on here could get a full nights kip then be up for a few hours and then get another full kip in readiness for a full or part time shift
that is a usual thing in theatre land rog, work a full 15 hour day on friday, get up early on the saturday to get the trailers in place and book off before 1300 to be ready for the out at 2200, then on the saturday night you will no doubt do a full 15 hour shift again to get the job done, all done completely legit but sometimes the cards are used in your favour! sometimes its a pain in the ■■■■ but others its brilliant when you know that you will be able to go to bed after about 5 hours work but on other days you cant sleep at all, its called life on the road. how many times have people gone to work after getting hardly any sleep at home ie, new born child in the house, or up all night with the ■■■■■ and spewing?
as for the OP, i have a sneaky feeling not a lot of bosses would have been impressed with what you have done, especially the leaving the truck and buggering off home. i know if i did that to my boss at the mo he wouldnt be happy and i would have a nice piece of paper in my hand with P45 in the corner of it.
you may find its all about give and take in this world, granted nine times out of ten its the bosses and companies that do the taking but its called getting on with the job and if you do help them out, when you need it they will normally help you out if they can.
maybe transport would have a better name and drivers would get treated with more respect if we stopped ■■■■■■■ moaning as much and helped each other out!

There’s a huge difference between taking a job on such as yours where that arrangement is the norm vs. doing a day run starting a 5am and then suddenly finding yourself expected to somehow get some sleep in the middle of the day and then carrying on with another long shift through the night when you’d normally be sleeping.
I couldnt give a flying ■■■■ if he was impressed with me, they kept telling me that their depot at Coleshill was only a few miles away so they had all day to sort something out and did ■■■■ all so I was extremenly unimpressed to.
If I had ran out of hours due to a situation beyond my/our control I would of parked up and gone to bed but this took the ■■■■ and they even agreed they were asking to break the law for them when telling me They knew I was there from 1pm so they had 7 hours in theory to get me out knowing full well the situation. Why should I give a ■■■■ about them when they make it so clear they dont give a ■■■■ about me? And I do not have an attitude problem I just treat people as I am treated, and if they wanna come the ■■■■ then so will I
You may find work let’s say a little flat
Ps you ask to do NOTHING ILLEGAL at all its illegal in your head

WOW so much angst, you need to chill out a bit. Getting so wound up ain’t gonna help.
Life’s to short to go OTT on this.
Your main problem now as an agency driver is where is your next shift coming from given the way you have behaved? You have taken your eye off the ball. Fact, agencys dont care about so much about the laws which every one knows is rarely enforced. Fact, the client is always right, what you have to rember is dont think just do as your told, simple. drivers that think always cause problems at work, this as an agency driver will be reflected in your wages, when theres not much work, new yr etc will your phone be ringing with a shift■■?

done it myself plenty of times,
im lucky if i get 5/6 hours kip a night. ive done 2 shifts with just 2 hours sleep…was buzzing by the end of it though lol.
also if hes worrying bout being up 19 hours with no kip, dont ever double man and stay away from the touring game as 20+ hour shifts with limited sleep is the norm.also if you find it hard to sleep in a room next to a noisy workshop youd be screwed trying to sleep on a flightcase backstage at a festival while the bands are playing LOL.

thing is if you puled your card at 1pm, then put it in at 10pm then it would look legal…may not be wise to do it but its all “above board”, plus if they had it fixed by 8pm you could have got 2 or 3 hours kip if you wanted to
as for your attitude get used to it, this is how agency drivers are treated by most companies.

the client is always right ■■?.
if you have the balls to stand up for yourself and not get treated like a mug then the client isnt always right. the company had plenty of time to sort something out but did,nt. tough.
“plus if they had it fixed by 8pm you could have got 2 or 3 hours kip if you wanted to”
3 hours kip and then onto another shift

hey if it meant i could then drive the 3 hours home to get my bed and sleep for as long as i want and get paid 8 hours for it why not.
The company and Agency screwed up and should never ask any driver to go illegal. they should be reported to area traffic admins. if poss get it written via text/email/fax or any other way what they expect you to do and tell them plain English no maybe/buts/possibly etc.
Just don’t do it, it’s your licence/your livelyhood/you families future/and your responsiblity.
No choice no argument no need.
end of.

Funny that, i have a completley different take on it. Maybe we’d have more respect if we grew a pair of balls and said no to being taken for granted that we’d do a 20 hour day. If he started work at 5am you can guess he was up at 4am, for anyone to assume or hope he might sit it through till midnight ,well its absurd. I do realise that there are some guys that would be happy to do such a stint on the basis ‘its all money’, i wouldn’t be one of them and it sounds like you would. I suppose thats the beauty of our job, you can find one that works the way that suits you. And its cases like this that highlight to us that there are obviously lots of guys out there who are prepared to do this stuff that others amongst us wouldn’t. My take on it is that if more people said ‘are you stupid, you want me to work till midnight and i started at 5am? get a life, i’ll see ya tomorrow’, then we’d get more respect. But as you say, you’d get your P45 so you do it, i understand.

I have turned down a shift for tomorrow and sat already at another agency as I do not need 5 days money every week to get by like most on here seem to. My life at home is more important then bending over for anybody for a few quid, not surprised so many drivers have the ■■■■ taken out of them and do 70 hour weeks “to pay the bills” I dont need to and while I dont need to I wont be letting anyone bend me over

yes i know its a common occurance in my old job (not doing that anymore) but its called adapting to what the job needs!
have you never had a day when a load was meant to be ready at say 1300 and it isnt going to be ready until about midnight so you pop the card and get your head down after a phone call to the office? i know its not a regular occurence in ‘normal’ jobs but it does happen

Good for you, you must be made of tough stuff to be able to do all that and safely drive a 44 tonne truck
I care not about the touring game, I used to double man regular up to scotland and didnt mind it as you can get your head down when not driving completely different scenario non comparable to this we used to do nearly 900 miles a day and I never had a problem with it.
I said I would not sleep in the room on a chair with the noise, also not taken note of it was a collective of things. No units or lorries there no showroom just motors they were working on. If it is so common practise to sleep in someone elses truck then why didnt the office or the other drivers there say so?

On very rare occasions yes, but I was a tramper then so it didn’t matter so much. However, for that time difference I’d say no simply because I’m a day shift driver and not night shift. If they can’t plan the runs properly then that’s their problem not mine. If I was a day driver only then I’d be in the same camp as Mike - “see ya tomorrow!”. Trouble is there’s too many yes men in the business such as yourself who simply ask ‘how high?’ whenever the gaffer says jump and that’s what [zb]s it up for the rest of us that have the balls to say no instead of just being the gaffer’s lap dog.
I’m all for helping out if the [zb] really hits the fan and quick decisions need to be made but in the instance above there was morrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrre than enough time to get something else organised but they just expected the driver to lap it up and do a 20hr shift. Good on him for standing up to them but I fear that he won’t see any wages forthcoming for walking off the job like he did, but that’s another discussion…
I would of just got on with the job…You win some you lose some.
But in this case I don’t think there was a need to break the law.
If you had just done the job they would of rememberd you, as you didn’t, they won’t forget you…
I remember when I was tramping in Europe having a 24 off…finishing work at say 18.00 then starting a new week 18.00 the next day…that was a pain in the arris…
