Bad day for steel

Got off the m5 (j7) at 05.30 this morning and steel all over n/s of island ( had been coned off).then this afternoon got off m5(j1) and turned down Black Country route into a tailback, about a mile down the road there’s a steel truck parked up with steel all around him.dont know what happened at either but thought it would of been a bit more secure
Cheers Darren

If it had been a bit more secure it’d still be on the trucks.

Seem many steel carrying trucks using straps instead of chains … not good practice

Totally agree with Rog, its unbelievable the amount of cut straps in and at the side of the road after being put on an inappropriate load, ie steel or even concrete floor sections, seen loads of loads of steel I beams secured by straps without edge protection, brave boys pulling them soon to be shed loads!

I agree. These lads really show their metal.

We have to on crane rail, we’re not allowed to use chains, apparently the steel is so had the chains can’t get a bite on it. We need to use 12 on a standard load with edge protectors on every edge.

Steel, in all it’s shapes and forms, is an acquired taste. I spend years on flatbeds, with a twitchy arse, hauling coils, wire, tinplate, pipes, ingots and what not around the country.

Funnily enough, the only time I nearly lost a load, was pallets of tinplate, on a curtainsider, with no straps at all. A bit to eager around a miss timed roundabout saw three pallets move at the front. They were caught by upright pallets along the side, which stopped them from going through the curtain. …

We dont need straps, we need Euroliners…

Definitely a few things to iron out.

Rog… If the customers says straps, not chains, then that’s what we use… we don’t have to like it, we just have to do it…
I haven’t used a chain in about 10 years, and “touch wood” haven’t lost any yet…

Don’t think either of yesterdays incidents were any of our lot, as the jungle telegraph had nothing to report this afternoon
