Just want to hear other folks tales of bad runs trucking. Here’s one of mine…got tasked with picking up a load of newspapers in a curtainsider. The traffic bloke gave me two passes for Humber bridge, just in case they can’t get all bales on one go but “see how you get on”. Gets to the place and they were told to double stack the newspapers by said traffic bloke. The told me to be careful going round corners when I left the place. The place was near Louth which has steep hills and this was winter and late at night. Came up to a steep hill and half way up the drive wheels started spinning. After half hour trying all sorts this beast wasn’t going anywhere but down the hill. Phones the traffic bloke and tells me one way or the other I have to get truck up the hill. The next 4hours and after lots of calls he sends for a breaker. The guy tells me that cos the newspapers were double stacked it was a dominoe effect when I went up the hill, bulkhead to back they dropped so that all the weight went onto trailer axles and off the drive axle hence the spinning. He pulled me up the hill and I carried on to delivery point over Humber bridge.lets just say the guys who were waiting for the newspapers weren’t impressed. Lots of hand balling by all of us. I then had to drive over to Sheffield, got to 500 yards to the RDC and the n/s suspension arm snaps. Had to wait 2 hours for another breaker to pick up the tractor. By the time I go back to the yard I was 22 hours.
Oh yes, I have a cracker to tell, I picked up a full load of large cardboard boxes that contained millions of Malteser size plastic pellets.
I was trundling along, the trailer door opened up and you guessed it, millions of Maltesers spilt on the road.
Another yarn, I pulled off a loading behind that was inside a factory and tore off a trailer door as it was not fastened properly.
sounds like he loaded at linpac in louth, heading to the humber bridge via the A18, which even in good weather can be a bad road.
paper isn’t that quite a heavy product? would of thought it would of been too heavy to double stack?
personally, in this weather, i would of chosen to use the A16-A180, over the A18… but thats me.
a steep hill? in Lincolnshire?
A few moons ago, Left penrith @ 03:00 Friday morning, tip Ellsmere port , reload Kellogs on the dock road for central Scotland. Home nice and early friday afternoon/tea time. Hah.
Broke down just after the M58 junction, just on the hill. Must have been about 04:30ish. Picked up a cyclinder, she was going nowhere. Sat there till 12ish at least waiting on a wreaker even had a car stop behind, driver get out and ask me for directions, he then pulled straight out into the first lane. God, horns aplenty, thought there was going to be a pile up.
So wreaker towed me to Haydock Scania and i then sat in there till the night man came down with the lowloader to pick me up. Must have been around midnight when he arrived. Time to load my motor and back up the road, finished around 7am Satuarday morning. Long old day that. Also long old week, as i started on the Sunday. 28hrs. Funny thing is, the night lad said, why didn t they phone me earlier, could have been here ages ago as he wasn t out driving the night before as he was off. By christ i was bored out ma mind.

yeah there is,
A16, louth bypass is a good one, got 3 good long drags, 2 N/B and 1 S/B,
A153 at cawkwell, near cadwell park,
A18 its not got a long one as such but there is plenty of short sharp one’s, especially between the A16 and A46
A46, got a couple of long ones, the ones around castor can be fun.
lincolnshire isn’t famous for hills but they are about.

mountainous like Holland!
when I was in " ice cream troop!
" we’d nip off to California
whilst mountain troop would nip to Holland!
There’s an actual mountain in Lincolnshire, at Cadwell Park Circuit…it’s not very high, but it’s a good ramp (not me in the picture, btw)
We double stack paper but its on those tiny pallets.
I had done a full days work, the phone goes, it is my boss, his driver had been broken down in France for a week, not far from the border in Italy.
His Scania was in a garage, they coulnt work out why it kept breaking down.
The garage had a bedroom and shower for fitters to use if come back late from a breakdown.
Christmas was a few days away, so the gaffer says run down bob tail to pick him and bring the loaded trailer back.
After working all day, I got on the ferry and drove all night to collect him.
Illegal hours I know, when I arrived, I said I need to sleep until it was my turn to drive again.
He plonked his dirty laundry bags on the bunk and insisted I must be in the passenger seat with the seat belt on and not
On the bunk as he would be fined.
He was quite happy to stay in the garage over Xmas, it was then non stop to beat the driving ban in France or be stuck again.
What are these “breakers and wreakers” you speak of ?
All mine are fairly standard for haulage. First one I think I already bored people with on here.
Tramper with a Scania R113 6 X 2 unit pulling a sliding Skeletal trailer with 20 foot container. Late for Monday morning booking at Morrisions northern RDC. Persuade security himmlers being 5 mins over is nothing given I’ve been travelling 2.5 hours.
Pull onto bay - won’t squash due sticking pins. I hammer on the pins, have transport manager on phone shouting at me to destroy his clutch and “give it some”. It goes with a very big bang and squashes.
Himmler’s staff on the dock having watched all this only then tell me I’ve been rejected as now 15 mins over. I point out that loaded squashed skele, with incline isn’t a good combo. They resist. The thing won’t pull off, rear right tyre had popped,
Try everything, 20 drivers swarm around, all with bright ideas and in deth knowledge of 113s and after much head scratching agree I’m stuffed and wonder off. Morrisons still refuse to tip. Hour later, Morrisons break down truck has to tow me off bay and dump me outside. The indignation. Could have tipped me in time it took to pull truck off bay.
Lost most of a day by time all was sorted.
Second one 6 months before…
Driving a rigid curtain sider up a mountain road early eve in Scotland during Winter, I was hit in driver’s side by an 8 legged tipper coming down a hill. No room for both of us. He lost control, skidded and hit my side. Took off mirror, smashed trailer headboard in and stoved in my door. Limped some miles to park up outside local truck dealership. Night heater didnt start. Was tired and just crawled into bed and spent cold night outside freezing with gap in the door waiting for them to open. Ice inside in morning.
Third one
Back on that Scania. Pulling a box from the grain and going around the M25. Trailer wheel blew, took a lot of the trailer with it and sent it over ALL lanes of the motorway?! Police shut the road to pick up the pieces of trailer. Got mentioned by that Sally Traffic. Spent ages waiting for tyre fitter, then more time up the road at country tip whilst mobile mechanic fixed missing bits of under run bar and wheel posts and mudguards.
Fourth one
Red hot day 2003, pulling 20 foot loaded with China clay ex St Austell. M5 a car park. On A303, using the gears and retarder taking it steady. One big hill leading to a roundabout and trailer brakes catch fire. Lovely stuff.
All this provided a fair gold mine of material for interview examples when getting into the aviation industry. Love dealing with a good challenge.
the hill at gainsborough for me in a twin steer iveco with no lift axle, set off for scarborough following my old man nice and dry so decide to go the scenic short way.
needless to say it hammers down about a mile from said hill and took about an hour to get up the sodding thing after several attempts.

A hill in Gainsborough !!!A631 ■■? Never seen one struggle to get up, surely a steep hill is preceded by a sign giving a percentage of difficulty .
