Phantom Mark:
You on about those ones on the 34 north of Oxford as you go over the other side of the small crossing/bridge ■■ ■■■■ right those are dangerous, air seat goes berserk over those
Correct yes there are two by the bridges my empty drag trailer took off !!
Bad or dangerous driving, not a bad or dangerous road.
As a professional driver, you drive to the conditions.
Conditions doesn’t only mean weather conditions
Conditions also includes the general condition of the road your driving on. Whether it’s motorway, A, B or C road makes no difference. If you are unable to keep your vehicle under proper control, you are not driving to the conditions.
Your drag taking off is not under proper control.
You’ve already mentioned you are aware of these particular problem areas, so it’s entirely down to you to adapt your driving to suit.
Before you insult someone’s driving please get all the facts you are entitled to you opinion of course BUT …there is a very bad dip in the nearside lane with traffic in the outer lane and being at night in the dark and not knowing the exact location of said dip once there it bounced my trailer simples no issue with speed or lack of control ect… I was simply stating it is bad section of road NOT bad driving!! Where did I say I lost control? The Trailer was light as in empty and bounced thats it! No doubt your a perfect driver !!! Or you sound like you think so as very quick to judge others (only imo of course) this thread was about the roads not how they are driven!!
tramlines on the a1 around peterborough are shocking, they are aware of the problem because it`s been patched up in places.
it annoys me when the powers that be get all high and mighty about road safety, then convieniently forget when it comes to forking out
Rapidly increasing population, for a variey of reasons, on a fixed land mass, the more people who arrive here the more servicing those people need…(constant water shortage SE England, seen how many people have been crammed in?)…it will eventaully mean gridlock as those unfortunate enough to be on the M25/M6 will witness every single Friday afternoon.
There is no hope that with the available funding that the existing road network can cope even if they could be fixed, there’s no doubt in my mind that the heavier lorries of the last 25 years have contributed to smashing the existing roads to pieces, but millions of extra people means we have had to similarly increase transportation to cope, so that too is only going to get worse.
Its almost impossible for the road crews to fix our existing poor roads now even if authorised, most roads carry so much traffic, far more than was ever envisaged (M6/A14 junction and the whole of the A14■■? did the traffic census’ before this white elephant was made get looked at by anyone with an ounce of sense), any lane closure causes miles of tailbacks and subsequent problems on alternatives.
Difficult to build additional roads too, as any available piece of land is grabbed for housing all these additional numbers…not as they necessarily see the new builds but the displaced will.
Basically they, those who you elected, crammed a quart of people into a pint pot, it couldn’t work and it hasn’t, the repercussions of all this is going to be borne by your children and their children, not just the road situation either.
the amount of claims for damage to vehicles is now at an alltime high…so it`s more cost effective to shell out for damaged wheels etc than it is to actually repair the roads

Get used to it, the roads can only get worse.

Good points!! Also seems these tramlines are a big deal deffo not going to get better either then?
Many have died on the A36, Codford area, there is a mirror on the side of the road at Upton Lovell, an OAP died pulling out, apparently the position of the mirror had been changed.
The locals call it the Valley of Death, due to high fatalities,in the Wyle valley, it is the road from Southampton to Warminster.
Simon:
Although I do Europe these days, I did UK work for 10 years before that. I’ve driven on all sorts of roads, including those 2, others like them and worse.
You can only control your vehicle. Being in full and proper control of your vehicle gives you the best chance in any situation.
Not driving to suit the conditions means you don’t have full and proper control which reduces your chances in any situation.
As professional drivers, it’s up to us to maintain full and proper control of our vehicle, it’s what you are paid for. That means making full use all the information available to us. Using our eyes to observe the road, the movements of the vehicle in front of us, sign posts, everything and anything else that’ll give us a clue.
As adults, it’s no use crying that it’s someone elses fault that you are unable to keep full and proper control. It isn’t, it’s your fault.
Back in the 1980’s a mixer driver was badly injured on the A4111 on a bad bend near Kington,Herefordshire. An artic coming the other way with a load of timber came around the corner and the crane slid off the load into his cab trapping him.
How could the mixer driver have avoided that Simon !!! The mixer was fully loaded on the correct side of the road.
You people seriously need to come over here and drive for a while, what you are taking about is nothing, compared to the USA your roads are like silk. Try driving along a hidhway then dropping 6 inches to roughest imaginabe surfaces then a 6 inch step back up again, dring a highway and finding a 3 foot wide, 6 inch deep pothole (actually thousands of them) on a major interstate route, driving across The George Washington bridge is like driving down a wash board.
I come over there to visit family and really enjoy the fact that it’s ultra smooth. Dont complain because you have it good.
A road in dangerous condition requires repair immediately, not when some office bound official has found some way of shifting the cost onto some other department’s budget. Either repair it - or close the road/lane. If the defect is reported to the Police rather than Highways there is a greater chance of action, because Highways will be more concerned to cover their backs with the Police reporting it to them, than they will if it comes direct from a driver.
Picture this, late at night rainy and murky on a road that is totally new to you -it’s easy to get “caught out” by a poor road surface especially if there is a lot of on coming traffic dazzling you. Sadly it’s not the ideal world we all wish for…
Thetaff:
Worse road I have ever driven on is the E36 from the German border to Wroclaw can’t do over 40mph in most places it is truly shocking
Good God! Is it still the same? DaDoomp dadoomp over them concrete slabs.Outside lane used to be a bit smoother.Don’t suppose you can stay there for long these days though?

I can almost guarantee that the majority of incidents on the A36 are speed related and not much to do with the state of the road. I’ve lost count of the number of lorries overtaking me or trying to when I’ve been traversing it, and yes I stick to 40 in the NSL’s.
Haven’t travelled the A37 beyond the A39 recently, whats the road like?

I for one recognize the standard of our roads to be quite good the design, lay out, road markings, signage, lighting and so on are above the standards of many developed countries, anyone who has driven in Spain in the dark will testify to this. Some stupidity still remains Traffic Lights on roundabouts at 2A.M and roadworks that seem to go on forever to name a couple.
