Back up Careers

I could go back to teaching or tutoring Maths, selling or general handyman. I’d prefer to move on though, if it came to it. Only started in Feb this year, so I’ll probably be alright for a year or two.

Photography, weddings/portraits/sports. Also HGV mechanic (cars too small for big hammers) failing those then I have plant licences and a can do will do attitude so anything that brings in cash.

I work for a software company 2 days a week from home. Then drive 2 to 3 days.
Only a recent requirement having worked full time for the software company for almost 16 years, but enjoying the variety.

I used to be a truck driver, I have 2 other qualifications, one that earns me a living now since I was forced out of driving & another that I can’t use/earn a living out of.

Electronics engineering, radio communications (installation, repair), PC repair, networking, that kind of thing.

Used to be on the spanners years ago but knackered my back so that’s out, likewise engineering.

Astronomer Royal

So, Conor, my GHD’s have begun to crackle and hiss. Will they go quietly or out with a big bang?

Interesting quote pimpdaddy…forced out…prey tell

Driving’s my back up for now…previously worked in morgues and funeral homes for over 20 years, got hacked off with it always trying to fit square peg in a round hole… didn’t like the way in which the whole industry was going… that’s when I called it a day… wont be going back to that to soon… so many experienced ppl just became dishearten with it and just left…

Nothing to prey tell, couldn’t find a good permanent job as a driver locally. I had been with my previous employer for over 6yrs, agency drivers took preference so I had no choice but to leave, fortunately I found a job in another trade.

I haven’t got a back-up career as such, but two years ago I graduated with a first class degree which has opened many potential doors for me. I did try an academic career and briefly worked in a university psychology department, but I couldn’t get into it. If I couldn’t drive on medical grounds then I’d probably pursue something along the lines of transport manager. I’ve been paid for a few feature articles in truck magazines - words and photography - so I could always work towards that. Plus I could always refresh my forklift licence, take up welding again, or even try my hand at man-and-van.

Always wanted to drive trucks since I was 5. But for the first 22 years if my working life I was a RAF policeman. Fully intended going into civpol when I came out, but failed to make the grade. So trucking was my back up for the year until I could reapply for Police, but by the end of the year I was earning more than I would be earning in civpol and 3 years later still doing it. So trucking was my back up, and has worked out just fine, my back up back up would be airport/security work.

That’s not saying much for the RAF police if some of the civvy street muppets are anything to go by

my own experiences of the raf police when I was in was awful - one of the pillocks charge me for letting off a fire extinguisher despite the fact I was dripping form head to toe, because that’s what everyone does lets an extinguisher off on themselves, my old man even complained to the CO as the raf police had my car docs more than he did.

It’s just like any job, you get idiots and top lads in every job. As for failing Civpol, likewise I have seen some idiots get in when I know some top lads that didn’t make it, it’s just being lucky on the day.

Where are the all the ex helicopter rescue pilots, captains of industry, secret service agents etc that are now on the agency “for something different”? Come on when they used to be my drivers’ mate or co driver I had to jam matchsticks into my eyes to stay awake during your war stories. Please torture, I mean share your experiences with everyone else.

Ha ha Lorry driving IS my back up career

+1

Agency noticed I had a HGV licences when apply for a none driving didn’t get the job, but they were quick to jump on the fact that I had a licences. It pays the bills that’s all it is to me.

Have worked in an office for a bit but hated that but it did pay the bills was also a sales demonstrator for a variety of products in a variety of places some better than others don’t think I would like to go back to either

If all goes pear shaped for me, then I will be going on the game :open_mouth: . If that doesn’t work our for me, Then I will go hgv driving

Teaching is a career that’s had the life and soul sucked out of it. I would have to be really desperate to return to it.
I’ve been trucking for about 18 months now so still enthusiastic ahout it, I currently have no plan B.

When I find my back up career I will let you know.
As I am one of the failed medical brigade I now find my enforced retirement so …(what’s the word) …Relaxing !

But I still hanker after getting behind the wheel , until it’s cold or wet or I am lounging around in the sun all summer. I find the feeling goes away if I have a bevy or two normally. Reading posts here now is as close as I get to actually driving .

Ps. the missus not the government keeps me before anyone moans , in exchange for cooking cleaning and ■■■■■■ exploits !!!
