Been out of hgv 1 for 10 years now ,drove then for 15 years previously and thinking about going on road again ,eager to get going but in a dilema the way things are with places nowaday with asesment drives i am just concerned if i turn up for one having been out of seat so long be bit rusty and not up to speed , i know for sure once out on road there will be no problem on my own ,any thoughts please
Ring a school nearby and ask if you could have a refresher with them
i came of class 1 in 2002 and went multi dropping in a four wheeler while my boys were growing up went back on class 1 in 2011 when ddf made me redundant and it is like riding a bike you dont forget just take your time reversing
When I came off left hookers, I used an agency to get back used to rhd before I started my new job, I did not get an asessment but not sure if that is normal for agencies. If you have 15yrs exp I wouldn’t worry mate.
thanks for replies ,suppose just things have changed with the way places operate now ,worrying about nothing ,
No i wouldn’t worry either, i’d been on car transporters for 20 years so had only rarely dropped or picked up a semi trailer for many of those years, once back on the game it all comes back.
The only problem you might have is all the poxy box ticking with some of the pedant driver trainer assessors at some of the big fleets, most of these blokes are sound and look for driver competence first and foremost but some are up their own backsides, my mate who has driven (mainly transporters) for over 40 years failed his Argos (agency) assessment due to not ticking a minor checkbox during pre flight checks…good, would’ve be laughable for him to ask some desk clerk how to get to an RDC with a 16’ trailer if the official route is blocked (i kid you not) he was far too good for them and he’s now back on the cars in a well paid job.
Do swot up on vehicle checks and the so called correct way to trailer swap, otherwise welcome back.
Driving assessors…a new breed up there own importance…get back in the saddle you will feel like you have never been away after an hour or two, most of us mature drivers have forgoten more than these jumped up self important people will ever teach you.
