Axor tips

Axor aka Hilters revenge, are crap trucks and can be unreliable they like to go through air compressor parts frequently ask any merc dealer spanner , they are gutless too, some of the electrics can be temperamental as well as can the auto boxes ,like the refusal to engage reverse gears and yes too small for tramping even the odd night out is bad enough

Ok so day 1. I have to admit it wasn’t under stress at any stage but it seemed a fair decent motor.
Gripes were reverse selection was hard work. Pulling away at roundabouts requires a bit of feathering or it just bogs down. The bloody seatbelt warning did my head in when manoevering in yards. No central locking. Pain in the backside when delivery ticket gets blown into passenger area.

I didn’t mind it on the whole

I loved driving the Axor (rigid, high roof), tramped all over Britain from John O’ Groats to Truro. Found it comfortable and very intuitive to drive. The one I drove had the slapover manual box which was new to me, but really liked it. The Axor and the CF have been my favourite trucks to drive.

I must be easily pleased then

I’ve driven most of the common ones, DAF, Merc, MAN, Volvo, Scanny, Renault, Isuzu (let’s not talk about that one)… BUT I can speak only for the rigids, not driven units yet. Seriously didn’t like the Volvo, can’t remember what model but it was basically like an LF interior with lots of sharp angles, very basic and plastic. I’d forgotten about the MAN… Wasn’t a big fan of the autobox, but did like the cab, was very spacious.

I,ll let you off m8

They feel a bit old skool, and are very basic, but very capable. I drive them every night and really like them for their simplicity. They’re a great reliable workhorse.

I thought DAFs were the worst trucks until I drove a Merc…

We had a Arocs on hire a while back and if you switched the engine off in reverse it broke it, wouldn’t start and had to get a engineer out. The Axor we had on hire recently, the lift axle wouldn’t lift whilst towing a empty decker, which was a bit lively in the wet, might have been something wrong with that particular vehicle though.

You might love them, but like I said I prefer DAFs to mercs

Why did you switch off in reverse I take it in gear and it lost air pressure same problem as volvos

Was in a very tight yard, and it was a strange truck to me, was a wee bit flustered, either I forgot it was in reverse or maybe I didn’t click the button that selects neutral properly… Yes lost air pressure and wouldn’t start. If I ever drive a Volvo I know to double check it’s in N before I switch off

I drive our axors in manual, I find it much smoother pulling away and overall better handling by having more control over the beast. The big lever does a double gear change up or down, the small lever on the end where your finger tips will be, does a single gear change up or down. It took me a day of practice but definitely find it a more comfortabe ride, especially up and down hills.
