I woke up 3.15 am, I finally fell asleep at 23.00, nearly 20 hrs later , bet planner did his normal 7-17.00 , not even half the hours I did , he’s no bloody reason to bemoaning , bloody part- timer
You fell asleep after nearly 20 hours.
Your planner did his normal 10 hours.
I won’t be as harsh as some of the rest doze, I think I’m actually warming to you.
Why did you not just book off after 15 hrs doze?
Why ‘wait’ for the tyre fitter, if he does not show so what?
And even if he does just let him get on with it, while you sit in your cab watching telly having a beer all showered and shaved.
Your working day is finished, ring him back after your 9 hrs off.
You can sure as hell bet your planner wouldn’t be giving it a second thought when he is at home or sat in his local boozer or whatever.
All you have achieved is potentially getting an infringement, fine, bollocking, or all three.
Not all tacho rules are ■■■■■■■■, some can work for you as well as against you, look after no1 mate.
still amazes, and infuriates me, how many “professional” drivers use tachos simply to suit themselves, and then wonder why bosses think they are bellends.
having read a number of dozy’s post’s - still trying to work out if some are purely for entertainment value… because I know the level of ignorance and arrogance displayed in some of the responses certainly is laughable, and not in a good way.
reality is;
most experienced drivers that are company minded will use tacho’s to suit the company, whilst still putting a days work in.
most experienced drivers that are not company minded will use tachos to save their own arse from having to work.
most OD’s need every minute available on tacho to make a living.
most inexperienced drivers/newbies get ■■■■ from everyone for not following their way of thinking.
one thing that everyone seems to forget is that no one on here is perfect. except me
If I may dozey this is what I would and have done as I also work for a large corporate entity.
Your situation is different so by no means wish to question your actions just give my input.
If a puncture was discovered late into my shift and I was in a location I could safely park for my daily rest I would proceed to book max hours depending on how long I had left and how long the fitter was taking to arrive.
Theres no point taking the ■■■■ and driving around with 2 infringements hanging over your head as vosa may question the printout and dig deeper. As I would play little part if any in the tyre change shenanigans I would inform the service company I was now on rest and may be asleep when the tyre fitter arrives. They may even rechedule for next day.
In this day and age signatures are not needed the defect number issued is usually enough for invoice purposes.
For arse covering purposes I would inform planners of the situation.
Now I know its a bit of a taboo giving the company you work for free time but as im trusted to fill in my own times and am never questioned, there is an unwritten understanding that when the poop hits the windy machine I will protect myself from infringements and do the company a favour by sorting it out with little risk of residual issues.
Planners dont want to deal with problems as theres usually bugger all they can do anyway, but life runs smoother if they are kept informed.
So in the end we choose this profession and occasionally have to go the extra mile, we will get no thanks for it (unless the planner is exceptional, which is rare). But if our truck is poorly we need to make her better this may mean giving up some free time but in this example you had plenty of options, the main one being going to bed and letting the fitter crack on.

You only are ‘co minded’ if the co is fair with you and treats you like a grown up, ie they reap what they sow.
You become not so ’ co. minded’ if the co habitually ■■■■ you about, treat you like somewhere between a child and a ■■■■■■■■■■■■■, and all the rest of it…again reap and sow situation.
I have been both of the above categories in the past, with excellent and total crap firms, both co minded, and not so co minded, but look after yourself only minded, and in between/a bit of both… as I am now.
You are critical of some of the responses, but haven’t said what you would have done in dozy’s situation.
What surprises me is how often a pedantic interpretation of drivers hours regs can get one in the poop.
Sometimes a bit of common sense is needed as long as theres little risk of a vosa ■■■■■■■.
Just occasionally one has to take one for the team or in this case the truck and get her roadworthy. After all we choose this profession and if id spent more time learning and less time ■■■■■■■■■ my classmates I could be doing a better paid but more boring job.
Maybe I still have a bit of old school passion in me but if the time comes when I wont help out my truck by bending the rules a little then its time to hang up me trampers sock.
Well its not my truck persay but weve shared enough special moments for me to consider her as such.

Sod that, don’t want to go back to those days.
Will never forget lying on my back under trailer on hard shoulder trying to kick off the inner wheel with both feet, broke the heel on me cowboy boots.
Some moan about changing a bloody bulb nowadays.

Choice between sat, …well maybe not with my finger stuck up my arse , but more like with a coffee on, sat on the bunk watching a dvd with night heater on…still getting paid.
OR
Sat on hard shoulder, possibly in the ■■■■■■■ rain, with a brace attached to a pipe jumping on it to crack off nuts, and lift a wheel off and another back on.
Let’s think about it for all of 1 second.
Nah, been there done that, …30yrs older now and 30yrs wiser.
Aint fussed about getting home, I get paid for nights out as well, so win win all round.

I know I stopped driving near 5 years ago now but up till then I changed most myself…oh the joys of being an OD…and time is money !
But if it was today and employed it would be on the bed and tv followed by coffee and Biscuits !
After all , Health & Suffering means you cannot do it now I bet .

Just out of interest, out of say…10 times, how many of those 10 (if any) did any driver stop and offer to help.
I aint saying ‘everybody helped everybody’ then, but at least mates, and local co.s to each other usually did on the whole.
Not so sure about today.
