I get a set weekly wage regardless of hours of £400 a week (gross). That’s £20800 p/a for basic trunking although with occasional nights out and extra collections it comes to about £24000. Average 45 hours a week (night work) … sometimes 35, sometimes 55 so I spose I’m on about £10 p/h for class II work.
I’ve had class II licence nearly 3 years and it’s my first hgv job. Is that reasonable or should I be looking elsewhere? One of our drivers is leaving saying he can earn more doing a cleaning job which I find a bit dubious. There’s not many hgv jobs going near where I live in East Sussex … most of them seem to be skips. I keep thinking about getting class I but not sure if it’s worth it.
Sorry, I know pay and hours has been done to death.
I see a lot of class 2 work in nottingham pays less then 24k a year and although over 5 years ago my class 2 job paid about that. You’re not over worked either it sounds like a steady(but boring to me) number.
A lot of class one jobs don’t pay 24k a year either!
Cue winseer to have another moan about pay and the industry zzzzz.
Ched:

I think the penny will soon drop that you can’t earn £20K cleaning toilets.
For the record, I think your doing OK for class 2 work. You might be able to earn a bit more doing heavy multidrop work for the likes of Brakes or as a bread rat, but I wouldn’t be leaving your job in a hurry in your position.
Ched mine averages out about the same as you, though I am hourly paid averaging 45 hours a week with basic being 37.5 hours and over time at time an a half week days over 7.30hs a day and £25 nights (not added to the wage) but I find my work interesting, so not leaving anytime soon.
Oh, on class2 in the North West
With my shift allowance (double days) I am on nearly £14 hour for doing assembly work for a big multi national. Whilst I have renewed my HGV and PSV licenses this year after letting them lapse, the wages for driving work seem to peak at £10 hour, with some offering as little as £7.50 hour.
A lot of jobs pay significantly more than driving work nowadays, which combined with a limited working week (rtd) meaning driving is simply not a financially attractive package anymore.
