Just wondering how different manufactures autoboxs fare after a fer years. What gremlins do they develop and how costly are they to maintain.

Highest milers I’ve driven were 59 plate DAF XFs with over a million km on and they seemed to be doing just fine. The 64 plate DAF CFs I drive now have over 300,000km on and are still going fine. Drove a few 59 plate Renault Premiums north of 500,000km and they seemed to be OK.
Driven a few FM and FH Volvos with either close to, or over 1000000 km on the clock(all 57 plate or later), which had now other problems than a shaggy interior.
My old Tga had a million kms on it with the autobox and apart from the usually on/off effect nothing went wrong with it
Our 61 plate FH have mostly over 750000km and nothing wrong with the I-shift at all,not bad when we run them all day then the night spongers run em up to Gretna and back fully freighted.
Bit off topic but how can you make willenhall to Holyhead trailer swop last 14 hours

Easy, you gotta be inventive that’s all. I could get a fifteen AND a night out out of that bad boy!
Not really “auto” are they.
Just a computer that presses the clutch and shifts the gears.
A real auto box well maintained would outlast any dry clutch hybrid.
But they cost a lot of money.
Hmmm. It does rather seem to indicate the source of issues with manual boxes.
We’ve got an '08 Scania Opti 3 pedal, with 800000km on the clock. Its had a dodgy synchro replaced under warranty, and that’s all. She is still sound as a pound, and planned for at least another 2 years normal service, and will be assessed again and kept on if she still has the get up and go.
Seems its a mercedes problem unfortunately.

I explained this once before. The new ones should really be called “electronic shift” not “automatic”.

Which leaves the inconvenient question of why only 2 years warranty on a factory exchange Allison trans v 3 years on a Fuller.
In addition to the power losses of a torque converter v clutch.
My Optidriver now has 452K on the clock and still sweet as a nut.
My r480 scania 2 pedle is just touching a million klms and still running great.
It had a minor issue a few months ago holding gears but it took scania 10 minutes to sort.
We had a W reg Erf in 2010 it’s not long been sold on ,the twin splitter was never touched in 6 yrs we had it , that’s as nr to auto as I want to be .
600k on 08 three pedal opti-cruise and it has started to jump out of even number gears when cold. No problem once engine has warmed up for some reason. Will need sorting shortly. Will keep posted if anybody is interested in cost and solution.

ZF offer a 10 year warranty and what power losses.

Driving a 61-plate Ivecrap 26-tonner for a well-known chain of builders’ merchants today. Can’t do slow manoeuvres anything like smoothly. Boss told me “I know it’s an auto, but it shouldn’t hop like a kangaroo”. Well, perhaps if they maintained it, but perhaps it’s just a heap of junk.

Can’t argue with a 10 year warranty .
As for torque converter power loss.

The new Actros gearbox is crap from brand new!!!
I’ve driven a 15 plate still smelling new with delivery mileage on (after 65 plate came out) at Nissin…
