Some may find this youtube channel interesting: other won’t!
This shows a detailed reassembly of a Meteor/Merlin bottom end.
Having luckily only known monobloc crankcase and cylinder block designs in my time, in which the pistons are inserted into the bores, the idea of fitting the liners and the cylinder block over the pistons and rings really does my head in.
Good to see these skills being passed on to younger generations.
Gardner official method is the same. If the oil pressure is OK when renewing the block & pistons because of blow- by or oil consumption, then leave the bottom end alone. The bottom of the liner was chamfered to make it easier… which is why Gardner liners must come out downwards!! This was a continuance of the necessary method for the LW whose conrods would not clear the bore, however the block was only for (1) 2 or 3 cylinders.
Same job for the Panton Memorial Lancaster. Hats off to the engine “erks” of the desert air force doing this “in the field”
My lazy, easy way out, thinking is instinctively thinking can we possibly fit the pistons into the upturned and assembled cylinder blocks and crankcase, then fit the crankshaft and finally fit the big ends to the crankshaft ?.
If not I’ll leave it to the experts and retire to the pub.Looks like a lot of potential for serious damage if get any of that process wrong and I’ve always preferred to drive em than fix em.
