The way he/she lines it up suggests it’s not their first time here. But as you say, there’s not a lot of headroom to play with.

I watched a bloke back in at Wickhams Warwick one time, amazing, the speed that he backed it in, I don’t think I could have turned the wheel quick enough. I expected him to stuff it up, but he was inch perfect in one hit.. I dips me lid.

That’s where a steering knob comes into its own. Gives you the speed and accuracy needed for a proper job. I didn’t need to do much like that at Buntines with trains, but with a wag and drag in England it was worth its weight in gold.

I can’t imagine driving a fork lift without one, but they’re illegal on road vehicles here.

I could have done that in one hit without power steering with my hoody up and the curtains covering half the side window , and how do i know …… because i’m a compulsive liar.

Seriously , watching from start to finish i don’t think he puts a foot wrong whereas i’d have a couple of shunts with one trailer but i think that’s due to a complete lack of interest in the industry due to working for and with brain deads .I’m into my fifth hour of waiting and it’s only 12.30

I think they are legal in the UK? They are certainly fitted to some vehicles for those with physical disabilities, and I don’t think they are illegal on other vehicles too.

On FLTs I think steering knobs are great. Practically a necessity. Especially if there is no side shift, although most do have that now.

On trucks, I hate them.
Maybe they wouldn’t be so bad if they were moulded onto the wheel, but the accessory type with clamps and metal edges are horrible. I want to be able to move my hands and arms about to different positions on a long run.

Having watched that I can see why the Oz national ballet is overtaking the Royal Ballet.

Notice how he used ALL the available space at each point, including where he pulled up in a straight line before attempting the move. All he had to do then was to unsteer his way to victory. He’d clearly been in there before!

Those steering knobs must be illegal 'cos you have to remove them for annual test.

I hated those ā€˜spas tic’ knobs with a vengeance. They always ran up the slit of my shirt cuffs and stopped me from safe steering because I wasn’t expecting the ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā–  things to be there in the first place. Early in my driving career, I learned to unscrew them from the steering wheel before setting off and then leaving them on the dashboard for the wa ker who normally drove the wagon to put back on. Abominable things!

They are illegal unless you are registered disabled. Plus, modern steering wheels don’t take lightly to them, they cause untold damage which is very expensive to repair.

Well i think the Leatherhead Looney did mention that two trailers couldn’t be reversed.You may all laugh but if you ever venture into leafy Surrey the country roads down there are littered with double trailer combinations and he will have been the pioneer of such vehicles.He did do a stint with the council and he worked in a fire engine factory ( the big red one was his favourite ) and against popular belief no sweeping brush was involved in his daily routine there ahem.

There’s been a few attempts to introduce them over here the last attempt after quite a few trials was with Denbys from Lincolnshire but it’s all gone quiet again. The roads here aren’t big enough for the traffic we have

When you say steering knobs do you mean the same knobs that fork trucks have fitted to their steering wheels or the people that are sometimes described as steering wheel attendents?:thinking:
