I think the vast number of £10 tourists madee a go of it, contributing to the country’s growth, whilst improving their lot.
Of course it wasn’t everyone’s cuup of tea. When my parents decided to emigrate, my father obviously told his workmates. One fellow (nicknamed Blackcat, because if you had a black cat, he had a blacker one) anounced he was also going to Australia, nobody believed him, of course.
My parents came by ship and given hostel accommodation in Brisbane. The day after their arrival they attended, what would these days be called an induction. Lo and behold, Blackcat was there. They had arrived by air. Mrs BC took one step outside of the pllane door and declared “I don’t like it here, I want to go home.”
They returned to the UK within months, paying their own fares and reimbursing the Commonwealth its costs. Once “home” they split up and he returned at his own expense.
For each one like her, hundreds arrived and enjoyed their improved lifestyle.
Were some of them brought by plane then, for 10 quid? I didn’t know that. I certainly liked the country and the life, in fact the reason I am no longer there is because I flew back to England for a holiday but also to spread the gospel amongst friends and family. None of them took me up on it and while there met a girl and married and it was the existence of her kids that prevented our own €10 immigration.
From my one time experience in Australia i loved it
At a population of about 27 million and being such a large place there would be plenty of room to solve trump’s and Europe’s problems
They could develop the outback and make it a home from home
Im sure it’s crossed the useful idiots mind
Australia have a much stronger stance on immigration than we have. The £10 Poms scheme was probably needed at a time the country wanted the numbers.
They were part of the “Populate or Perish” (as the slogan was) push to increase labour, skills and infrastructure. Poms were part of it, but thousands of Italian, Greek, Maltese and Asian families emigrated too, as well as refugees from war-torn countries.
Not sure if this is the right place but not worth its own thread.
I read somewhere the other day that there has been an inquiry into the nasty white man colenising parts of Australia. It was decided that they commited genocide on the aborigines. Anyone know anything about this or is it more fake news
The Yoorrook Justice Commission, in Victoria?
Might be better in the Politics thread? Rather than the general Aus thread?
If it were me, I’d post that question on the bollydicks forum.
I was more looking for if it was true there was such an investigation which i guess you answered
Im going to have to ask whats the bollydicks forum
I call politics “bollydicks” cos I can’t take it seriously. What I mean is the multiple threads on the Bullies board.
@cooper1203 grossly exaggerated click bait.
@parkroyal2100 we had the White Australia policy until the early 70s, when Whitlam got rid of it. That restricted migration to Poms and western Europeans.
What was the white Australian policy, never heard of it
No Asians, Indians etc.. only western Europeans. Many Asians and Indians bring their cultures here and expect us to adopt them. I wish we still had the old policy sometimes.
I remember, after several years of living in Oz, when I finally left from Mascot airport (Sydney) I was astounded to see a very black African face amongst the crowds. Obviously used to it in Europe but almost unknown in Australia. Quite different from Aboriginal faces of course.
As a result the word ‘w og’ was reserved for Italians and Greeks.
