AudiQ8 towing vehicle?

company has moved in to units next to us doing body work on high end vehicles porches ferraris jags range rovers etc covering stonechip damage and doing small repairs bumps and scrapes etc .

these vehicles come in from all over the country and are usualy collected by the owners son in his Audi q8 towing a large covered six wheel trailer often this includes range rovers and other large 4x4s

my question is with the gross train weight of this combination being over 3.5 tonnes and being for hire or reward do they fall into tachograph regs ?

I would of through so, yes.
But how many sprinters E.t.c do you see towing trailers and they don’t have tachos?

A guy I know does nationwide car deliveries using a discovery 4. He is always moaning about how much it cost to get a Tacho fitted!

I thought the Q8 was being released in 2016

I ask as I cannot find any specs for it on the internet

The Q7 has a towing max of 2800 kg = carleasingmadesimple.com/busines … ght-limit/

Realistically with the type of trailer weights involved in transporting the larger car types the whole issue of weight mismatch between towing vehicle and trailer causing the tail wagging the dog situation, tacho and licence requirements are a mine field. On that note there are surprisingly very few suitable vehicles and often even then being borderline.Probably to the point where the ideal would be using at least a 7.5 tonner for the job obviously requiring at least C1.Or C1+E entitlement. As for tacho regs I think they are dependent on wether it’s a hire and reward/business operation.Of which transporting customers cars as part of a repair service would probably fit the former.

There are Audi Q7s around with digi tacho fitted - head unit in glovebox and telltale light on dash display.

Are you sure it’s not a VW Touraeg as they have 3.5t tow capacity.

No real safety issue the reason the Audi won’t be rated to 3.5t officially will only be down to either the ratios or lack of a low range box.

Think the toureg can manage a bit more than 3.5t

sorry meant the Q7 bloody heads all over

A tri-axle car transporter trailer is likely to weigh between 1000 and 1500 kg empty which does not leave much payload with a 2800 towing capacity

If it’s a business they’ll need a tacho and looking at the unladen weight of the Q7 at 2060kg they might need an O’licence. as it sounds like they’ve got a Brian James Transporter 6 which has an unladen weight of about 1300kg.

However it seems you can spec a Q7 to have a towing weight of 3500kg.

PS if they want to stop using the Q7 to tow, I’m sure we could provide a transport service, we have a the same type of trailer and use a VW Crafter to pull it, We also have a full International O’licence, run a tachograph, and are insured to £1m for the cars we are towing, but can easily increase that on a temporary basis if needed, and loads of experience of handling very expensive and rare cars

i use to own a toyota amazon and in the handbook it did warn that in certain circumstances while towing you may need a tachograph,i only pulled a caravan weighing just over a tonne, only way of knowing if i was towing it was when i looked in the mirrors

No that’s a replica, well it was a proper 787, but not the Le Mans winning one. It was the one they put on the Sculpture at this years Goodwood Festival of Speed.

This is the real one and yes it does have a (ahem) Rotary engine.
