Attracting the young

ralliesport, with that attitude you won’t get far, experiance counts for alot in this trade. its not like running around a big field filled with emptyness,(apart from your head). it takes something special to reverse 60ft into a tight spot with cars, buses people etc.all around you at times you need eyes in the back of your head. so if you think you have what it takes why don’t you go for it instead of slagging experiance drivers irrespective of how long they have done the job for . as mentioned earlier on another thread you never stop learning i know i’m still learning after stepping from a volvo fh12 to a man tga 410. you must have the right attitude for this job and it seems unless you change yours nobody will take you on. one thing to remember if you do decide to go for this trade at your interview the person who takes your interview will probably be one of those drivers that you think your better than, not

I agree with all you say. My point is that you cant judge on age as to the ability of your driving. Ive been driving since 14. Ive driven tractors, quadtracks, fastracs, combines, pea harvesters, 180 & 360 diggers, teleporters, 8 wheeler erf. Ive operated a tractor & trailer 22tones in & around louth. Ive operated a tractor & articulated trailer on conoco in immingham, reversing it round bends most people wouldnt even atempt.

Ive had bad jobs, out in the poring cold & rain, in grain stores hotter and less air than hell.

I judge people on what they can do, I dont say im the best driver, neither do I accept that someone else is better driver than me. Experience is to be gained and to be given.

I will apoligise in advance for this, Lucy!!
Ralliesport, your nick says it all!!! You sound just like a boy racer!!!
Now, you said earlier in the thread about keeping to the law etc■■? you telling me you have done all this at the age of a mere 22■■? How much of that was illegal then? [zb]
[zb]!! [zb] cos you are going NOWHERE fast in this business with your [zb] and one day soon, you are going to be taken down a peg or two very firmly

Much as it pained me to do it, the personal attacks had to go…L.

Spose` thats the end of that then■■?

Ralliesport, You might have the makings of a good Driver, The Agricultural experience is good especially in the agricultural haulage sector. However with your attitude you will never make a good driver, because you don’t seem willing to learn from those who have done it.
You learn a lot in this industry from older wiser drivers. I have found that if you ask and are willing to listen they will always pass on their experience. I have been doing this job for 10 years; I have done agricultural haulage, Tilts, Flatbeds, roping and sheeting and worked for motor racing teams. Each job is different and the only way to do it properly is to learn from those who have gone before. This is knowledge that cannot be taught in a classroom.

TONY:
Spose` thats the end of that then■■?

Not at all, Tony…just keep it civil, is all…:grimacing:

Of course Lucy if we cant respect each other its time to give up… :unamused:

Lets get off rallys caes and back to topic, how can we attract the young then■■???Certainly not with £5 p/h insults and dire conditions, the hours will be 48 anyway come march 2005    Your class 1 is worth £8 p/h min,no matter where you live TRUST ME. There is a driver shortage isnt there  If you are working for less than that you are selling yourself short for the SKILL you have to offer.SIMPLE AS THAT.With respect Tone…

Sorry to say but the old adage there no fool like an old fool comes to mind, the rates for any driver with 1 or 21 years of ex. is the the same they both have the class 1 and can drive the same trucks, when I (no it,s not a song) was a boy they used to say you cant buy experience 20 years latter,i would not want to.Rugby truck stop used to be half reasonable to stop so where all the other BP,s the first time I went in to the gaffer with a 12 pound parking ticket he nearly fell off his chair. An other example is an ex-transport gaffer I meet a while ago told me when I asked him why did you leave the transport business told me there is no money in transport and that he is now running an agency for drivers.good money if you work all weekend and every hour in between.

Younger people don’t want to drive LGV’s because they wont be able to bat up the road like the proverbial brown smelly stuff off a shovel ( unless you’re off the overnight ferry from Larne)

Just a thought, but do these people banging on about earning good money doing 70-80 hours a week realise that compared to your typical office/factory worker they are actually working 2 weeks in one week for said good wages.Bye the way im an owner driver so I know what its like to work long hours admittedly its for my own ends.

[I earn £10.40 an hour and overtime after 8 Saturdays is £13 all hours Sundays is £15 all hours]
Not working for Wincanton you don’t :unamused:
In my previous job as a trained TV engineer i was earning £8.72 an hour.
I have a choice where i work, and that is i can clock out after 8 hours if i wish, so 8 x 5 = 40 hours and im still earning more than my previous proffesion, or i have the option of putting alot more hours in, which i choose to do, if i go out and do a store delivery, i will come back and ask for a trunk to get my hours in.
Im not saying all jobs in the transport industry are like this, and im lucky to be where i am now after only 4 months, but as its been said on here many a time before, if people will still work for peanuts then employers will still pay peanuts. Someone will always work for £5 an hour and thats there choice but until people refuse to accept poor wages and long hours then the job will continue to be exploited.

uhh yes actually i do thankyou

If I’m wrong Gurner then pleaes accept my apologies,do you mind if I ask where/on what work. Not chasing a job ,just curios :open_mouth:

im on the woolworths contract in swindon, and its £8 days and then £2.40 on top of that for unsociall hours 18.00-06.00
We have an outbase at south mimms truckstop, just past the diesel pumps on the left, always looking for drivers as is swindon DC.

Now thats a more accurate picture Gurner,£8.00 basic is more typical adding on allowances distorts the picture, glad you’ve got something you’re happy with Happy New Year to you and yours

Well ok if it distorts it then ok, but thats what i earn, i work nights
Happy new year to you and yours aswell.

How can you claim 8 quid is good money it is far from sparkling :open_mouth: Sainsburys WHAREHOUSE staff in merseyside are currently on strike for that price DAY RATE  This is in an area with dire employment problems and its fair share of social prob`s too.Picture the scene a PROFESSIONAL driver rolls up in a 44 tonne artic with all the responsibilty that goes with it working for buttons i.e. :Between £5/£7, To be unloaded by a guy on £8 + :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth: And there is some trouble attracting people into this Industry/AND a driver shortage    WELL BLOW ME DOWN WITH A FEATHER :open_mouth: Wake up lads we are being SHAFTED…

Dont bother ill just edit it myself.
Pathetic

Pardon me? but what are you talking about
