An eight wheel Borderer is certainly a rare and unique opportunity just like it say’s.

Single headlight cab, pre '63 registration and an AEC 691? Seems a bit early for the dry liner engine to have been original option fitment.

Seems doubtful if that’s the original lump, especially considering it’s immediate past life.
Anyone in the Swindon area want to go and have a look at it?

I think your irony is lost on some, David…

…given that a Borderer is a post-1970 32/34T tractor unit with a Mk.2 cab!

WHOOPS!

It may well be that the AV691 is the original motor. I know that Whitbread ran a number of Atkinsons with AEC engines, both bow-fronts and Mk 1s, so this could well be one of them. Atkinson certainly had AEC engines listed as options in the late fifties & early sixties.

Quite correct, They fitted these because there was a shortage of Gardners, Likewise Fodens fitted Leyland 680s, As well as ■■■■■■■■ Regards Larry.

AFIK the 691 was produced from 1965 on. The earlier engine was the 690. So: do we have a typo, a re- registered vehicle with a cherished number plate, a vehicle first registered by a council that was late introducing suffix registrations, an engine swap, or a cab swap? Or is it what it says on the tin … other than it quite obviously isn’t a Borderer but an L2286 or whatever?

Quite a substantial number of Atkinson lorries were fitted with AEC engines, first in the years of WW2,and then from 1954 to 1964 at least. The first was mainly because of a shortage of Gardner diesel engines, and the second period was because lorry operators really liked AEC engines and motor vehicles, and wanted
more powerful engines than the underpowered Gardner engines
