Hello There,

Just joined this site and saw the post about the Atkinson with a Krupp cab. I use to drive one of these in late 1972. It was operated by a haulier called BurnAlec of water lane in Watford and I was on contact to MAT Brittania whose office was in Holywell Lane London EC1.The two guys in the office at MAT were George Attepa and Lib Decesare. I use to run to Greece and Italy. Geurge ended up with his own haulage company ruuning to Greece and Cyprus ( Mondial Shipping ) and Lib ended up with his own forwarding agents (ItalSped). Some years later when I ran my own truck I use to get loads from Lib down to Italy, mainly from Perkins engines in Peterborough.
Back to the Atkinson with the Krupp Cab it had a Rolls Royce 220 Eagle engine and a ZF gearbox. It only ever let me down once and that was in Milan when the water pump failed. A mechanic from a marine engineers came out to me and carried out the repair. The 220 Eagle also had a marine application.
I use to take it on occasions to an Atkinson dealer in South London for servicimg.
At the time there was an owner driver called Ray Toure or tor and he ran one and on one occasion we both took a load down to Halkis near Athens Greece.the load was 20 tonnes of glass each for a commercial greenhouse we loaded near Winchester.
I have tried to track him down since but to no avail.I have a picture of my Atkinson on the autstrada near Milan I will find and scan it then post it here.

Brilliant! Look forward to seeing your pics  Do you remember the reg? I presume the dealer you visited was in Balham?

Hello Again, yes I do remember the registration it WNK 419 J. It was originally painted orange and then later on it was painted dark blue with a yellow chassis and wings.I do have a really goos picture of it but unfortunately my scanner does not work at present.
I seem to recollect tha the garage where I went for a service was in Peckham south London the owner was Bernie Stone ( Burnalec Transport )

Thank you! I don’t know that number, and I’ve certainly not seen a pic of it. I’m now on the edge of my seat awaiting the return to health of your scanner!!

Ah, not actually an Atki dealer, then? And do you know the eventual fate of your motor?

No I don’t know the eventual " fate " of the Truck. Thinking back the service centre in south London might have been in Lewisham and not Peckham . Although the only trucks that were in there when I was there with
my vehicle were Atkinsons’. So it must have been an Atkinson specialist and a name that seems to spring to mind is Penfold Commercials but I could be wrong on that count. If I can find out anything else then I will keep you posted.

IIRC it’s C series ERF from the rear of the front springs back…

Hi Gasa401 did you ever see this 400 I used to load back of Stirland out of the storage place at Grantham with Petfoods for Scotland this would be 83/4 time and in 1980 I used to load out of Lenton I was with PERCY HULL of AYR then and often parked overnight on the wee road outside the yard Hull had two tone blue Volvo’s and a Scania. John that was based in the cabin at Grantham was a gentleman always willing to help anybody he told me once he used to drive for BUNNEY HILL motors I heard he had passed on a while back. Eddie.

Absolutely correct, Steve. All of John Killingbeck’s 38 tonne Mk.2 Atkinsons were double drive, and were either original build tractors or shortened rigids.

Seddon Atki in need of restoring.

01234[attachment=5]image. This atki does belong to steve greenwood,it was ex Safeway supermarket with a 250 ■■■■■■■ and a 9 speed fuller. Steve converted it about 11 years ago with a c series ERF back end . It now has 320 ■■■■■■■ with turbo and the 9 speed fuller. He also had a jake brake fitted a few weeks ago before traveling to Paris pulling a low loader to attend a truck show. Hope this helps. Regards. Foden 46

Very interesting thanks .

These were the last two British built units I ever bought at Bewick Transport in '84,to be fair they did a good job but the main reason was they were a very “handy” price, were Gardner 8LXC’s/Fuller 9509/Rockwell so they were fairly bomb proof but sadly they were’nt in the same class as the Scania,so it was tinged with a bit of sentiment I suppose( :frowning: ) considering all the Atky’s/Sed Atks we had run over the prvious years :frowning: :frowning: Bewick.
