I may be wrong Ken903 but I do not think that, as a tourist, you would get a transit visa for Saudi. Thats the only real problem - apart from a little war in Syria - so the first thing you would need to do is to contact the Saudi Embassy in London and check.

thank you for that david i will check as aussie we are very luck that we can travel in most countries i have worked in the uae so we see how we go cheers ken

Ken 903,I think you would be absolutely crazy to think of attempting that trip, the current unstable situation in any of the countries you would have to transit make it fraught with difficulties and much more dangerous than a Saturday night out on Scotland Rd. Liverpool. If you have enough time wait about 10 years and see what it s like then. Don t do it,regards Crow.

Syria and Iraq may be a bit dodgy

Is anybody actually round tripping to the M/E from the UK these days?.

The reason I ask is that on there was a grey euro liner dropped on an industrial estate near me, south coast, at the weekend and what caught my eye was the Saudi transit plate on the rear. It did look kitted out for distance work with spare wheels and a couple of large locker boxes but the plate could just have been a bit of bling. The trailer number was HET001 if this means anything to anybody.

The unit could have been in the Merc agents but I couldn’t see anything obvious.

Just curious that’s all.

Cheers

Ron, thanks for that picture.

Gerry (Wheels) Whelan was a dear friend of mine and that is a perfect picture that even captures his humour.

Thanks again. David

And how could a thread be hush with you around, Freddie?

I actually posted the photo of Gerry Whelan responding to a post that has now mysteriously disappeared. I don’t have anymore photos of Gerry if that’s what you meant Fred but I can post some more photos of old Middle East hands although I have already posted them before but not on this thread.

Here’s a couple of pics from around 1980, when Dale-Link International was going to take on Astran for the title ‘Middle East Haulier of the year’…

didn’t quit work out like that…

All just landed at Ostend…

…Turkey, salt lake somwhere near Urfa if my memory is correct?

And this is me… with the obligatory truckers sweatshirt…

Hi all.I may stand to be corrected, but as i remember the salt lake[Tuz Gölu]was between Ankara and Aksaray on the right hand side.Mike

Hi Hutpik, Yes, of course it was, I had Aksaray in my head…but fro some reason went for Urfa…in my defense…it was 33 years ago!!

Just to confirm that I was there, this is me getting ready for the next stretch…to Aksaray

We were all a lot younger then, and had more of our faculties[even with the debilitating effect of Efes]Mike

Ahh yes…"tomorrow is cancelled…Efes Control!!

Where is this…not sure myself but think it could be Romania. Pete

You sure it’s not somewhere in Istanbul ,just going by the architecture.Mike

Not sure at all, know what you mean about the architecture, it could be Bulgaria or Yugo. All I do know that it was taken on the route to Baghdad,
either through the Commie block or Austria, thinking about it, probably Austria - Yugo - Bulgy route.
