Astran / Middle East Drivers

I have just turned 80 (April) and in pretty good nick - I think that I would have a problem getting up into a 141 now - Regards Fred

Fred, Fred that can’t be right surely? I mean I always knew you were and ancient old bu**er but I never thought you were that much older than me! For God’s sake I don’t get my pension till next May!

Seriously mate I’m delighted! Just did’nt know.

David

Oh and another thing Freddie!

That F12 picture you put up the other day was actually UMU930S which was my old motor. We never had a UMD at Grangewood - the other F12 which Jimmy Conners drove was… er… OK I can’t remember but it wasn’t UMD

God but I hate this getting old business!

RDF,

John McClung drove Mervyns 141, JEV 528V, for many a year. He had it from new.

At the same time Bunny was driving an F-12, UMD 46S, there was always much rivalry between them as to which was the best truck to have.

Having said that, they both had the highest regard for Merv’s F89, STW 383R ( John drove that for many trips too, before the 141 came along, and almost bought it from Mervyn at one time ).

Steve.

freshir wrote, noticing the reg on Bunny’s F12 nudged me into posting a pic of Grangewood’s F12 = UMD 930S taken at Mar’s factory Vienna about mid 80’s (?) and my young son posing at the wheel is now a firefighter at Exeter and he is now 48, Regards Fred H

freshir wrote, Sorry Andy that is the only pic I have of the F12, why I was driving it on that day I do not remember as I had a 141
perhaps if my old (Young sorry) pal David Miller reads this post he may have more pic’s as it was his truck and as I recall women kept shaking their fists at me when I drove thru towns, I think that is why he is now in Gotenberg, hope you have success in the modeling project I will follow your post,s with interest - Regards Fred

I USED TO LIVE AT THE END OF NORMAN ROAD IN GREENWICH WHEN I WAS A YOUNG LAD , I ALSO USED TO CLEAN GRANGEWOOD TRUCKS ON SATURDAYS MORNINGS WHEN THERE WAS ANY IN THE YARD , THIS WAS ABOUT 1981 - 82 TIME , I USED TO LIKE THE FIAT THEY USED TO HAVE & AM GOING TO BUILD A MODEL OF THAT TRUCK ASWELL

YOU MIGHT BE ABLE TO HELP ME , ON THE F12 DID THE PIN STRIPPING GO ROUND THE WINDOW ON THE DOOR LIKE ON THE SCANIA 141 , I NO IT GOES ROUND THE BOTTOM HALF OF THE DOOR & THE BOTTOM HALF OF THE SLEEPER PLUS UPPER HALF OF THE SLEEPER BUT UNSURE IF IT GOES ROUND THE WINDOW■■?

Andy - Sorry but I do not have any info regarding the piping on the F12, the old memory is not what is used to be, we had a local man who painted our trucks in our workshop and very good he was too and and as I recall he did his own thing so I don’t think there was any uniformity when you dig deep. The Fiat that you mentioned was an O/D namely Jimmy Buckle (RIP) and when you mentioned that you washed the trucks on a Saturday morning then I remember you well and I can now understand your interest, I was still with Grangewood’s in 82/83 just before they closed down - Keep in touch - Regards Fred

Andy I have sorted out a pic of the 141 although I don’t reckon it will offer much intricate detail for your project, Fred

Andy, You mentioned Sim Jones (RIP) he lived on the Wirrel, what a great man he was, he went almost non stop to M/E and was almost impossible to run with, he was an O/D and he always wore his Parachute Regt: tie even in the unbearable heat of the M/E one of the great characters on our job, will you send me a PM with some info: re GW’s photo’s that you have and I am sure that I have a photo of one of E.M. Rogers who I met on Mt: Cenis, I will look it up it may be you dad Regards Fred
