Astran / Middle East Drivers

I saw an old Astran Scania and trailer on the M62 this morning around 7.15am couldnt see if it was a 140 or a 141 closely followed by 3 70s units 1 was Vic Pearce`s DAF ex Wilsons Transport Bradford, looked like they were going to a show

They were/are going to Truckfest Newark this weekend. It was where the “origanal” truckfest was held. It’s a kind of “reunion”…

“old” Astran Scania is a 141 owned and restored by Carl Jarman. Surely you must have seen it before? :unamused:

I probably have seen a picture of it but it was early morning and i only saw it at the last minute it was the trailer that caught my eye as it went in the opposite direction

Isreal, maybe someone might recognise it?

ok so if syria becomes a no go and you can not go south into N/Africa as posted before does that mean no trucks from Astans to the middle east? Or can you do Russia ect. I would have thought Iraq might be calming down .

There used to be a ferry to Tripoli in the Lebanon, they convoyed us into a compound near the dock, surounded by a big high bund to stop any stray bullets they said  It sailed to Triest and called at Cyprus bit of a old tub ,i am trying to find some photos i have of it. I am sure we had about 1 hours drive in Syria though, but it missed Damascus out and still had to go through Derra :frowning: Dodgy.
Don,t know if its still on the go as it was 26 years ago.Klunk

I,m know my dad sailed out of Triest butdon,t know if this is the boat. Or does anyone have any info only have one more pics of the boat and 2-3 more once he was off the boat

This bloke is the late great Laurence Kiely, who in my opinion was a bit of a legend. As a young fella I used to read his excellent travel stories about m/e trucking in Truck and Driver and Trucking International.

His well written tales of doing tough on the overland run took me off to far away places and made me want to become a m/e driver.

I read years later that he sadly died in a crash while driving in Jordan. He should really have his own thread. Did any of you blokes ever run with him?

NZ JAMIE,

I never run with him as such, but during the years that i was the fitter for M&C Transport, Laurence done quite a few trips for Mervyn and also Peter King who owned Peterlea Trucking, and as such i met him on numurous occasions.

He was a mighty fine fellow, never minded getting his hands dirty and helping any drivers along the way. He had many a good story to tell, which he often did when we had a “control” down the local boozer.

I will have to have a Google and see if there is anywhere on the net that any of his articles can be read…

Regards Steve.

I think there may be a few articles scanned on here somewhere
That would be an idea for a book if they published some of the old ldd from truck magazine

Further to my above post, i did spend a little time on Google, and found this.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SX5jcCcri2M ( Typical of Laurence’s sense of humour ! )

The video was posted in May this year, so maybe, just maybe, your comment about him no longer being with us is wrong ■■

I will try and contact him and hopefully get a reply…

Steve.

That was why I posted the pic without saying who it was, to see if anyone actually recognised him cos sometimes over the years putting a name to a face can be difficult. The pic was taken from a LDD he did driving a F12 Left ■■■■■■ for Peterlea Trucking. I too used to love his stories, I asked about him a few months ago on this thread & there was a mixed response someone saying he had died, even down to another saying he was now driving a dust-cart!!! I posted a pic of a Prior DAF 2800 a while ago that was Mr Kiely’s on a LDD again when I believe he was employed by Prior’s! Be nice if he is still around if someone could get him on here cos he would no doubt have some great stories to tell!
Regards
Chris

the driver who was killed driving for peterlea trucking was called Hal Rossco NOT the trucking GOD laurance kiely. In my opinion Laurance should be up there with The trucking legend Phil lewellen (spelling not correct!) both these guys inspired us 30/40 somethings into trucking to the middle east ect. Laurence did indeed drive for Priors but many years for Peter Lea trucking and as many will no took on what must be a trucking One off. . One of the 1st trucks into Kuwait (page 187 front truck in THE book) re load for Tunisia BUT trucking being trucking he could not at the time go overland accross north africa but had to go via Ostend i think to pick up paperwork bounce back south and accross to north africa. epic. As for what hes up to now? Ive no idea but wish i did! trucking god.

Newmercman used to write for the trucking magazines as well so im guessing he may have some more upto date info for you.

Well bugger me,that’s great news, just shows that you shouldn’t belive everything you read. I’m sure Laurence himself we be pleased to know that he’s not dead. Must be a strange thing to hear that you’ve passed on.

It may sound a bit sad but he was a bit of a hero of mine when I was a young bloke in the 80’s,so I’m stoked to hear he’s still about. I have a load of old Trucking Internationals from the 80’s,I’ll have a look for some of his tales.
