Hi Sheeplady, was the town with the tunnel where John had his truck washed called Birecik ?.
If you take a look on Google Earth you should be able to find some photos of the area.
I have a feeling that there was another tunnel somewhere along the T.I.R. route through Turkey where the kids used to throw stones at the trucks below if you didn’t throw them some sweets or ciggies although I thought that the side of the hill that I am thinking of was a lot steeper than this one and there might of been a castle on the top of it or some houses.

That’s the place I was thinking of Steve - but if there’s another tunnel like that, it could be it. I’m left wondering now…

Steve,
My pic was taken on the bridge over the Euphrates at Birecik.
There was a truck stop on the west bank of the river, behind me and to the left of where my pic was taken.
There were houses cut into the face of the cliff, and the gradient on coming off the bridge and entering the tunnel was like hitting a wall.

Thanks Ian, I now realise that the photo take from Google Earth is actually coming out of the town heading towards the Euphrates on the way home. I remember that there were fields (which could of been a flood plain) as you were climbing up a hill just before you got to the tunnel where those cheeky little monkeys used to play. (z.b.'s)
Hi Fred, no it wasn’t at Agri as I am now sure that this was the same tunnel although I remember it being more impressive when you came towards it from the other side.
Regards Steve.

Nice one!! Good luck, hope you get to do a trip.Dont forget your diary and camera!!
Have you run down to M/E before? If not it would be interesting to hear about it from a novices point of view. Good luck
Heres two of the same tunnel i think these were taken in 1984.
I could be wrong on the location in these pictures this is maybe the tunnel at Siverec on the road from Sanurfa to Diyarbakir.
It was a while ago, the tunnel looks similar.

I took this picture of Chris Hoopers Scania 143 weekended at Habay truckstop Belgium
it was sunday the 6th of june 2004 as my birthday was the 7th and i remember going to
the bank on the German border to get some money, only to realise my bank card had ran
out of date on the 31st of may and having to park up in Southern Germany that night with
no money and only 2 bottles of Becks left in my fridge!!
