Not as far as Tahir but most of us passed this place on the way down.
Terry Smith took this photo years ago but can anybody remember :1, The name of this castle or the town.
2, The name of the very steep hill that you went down just before the turn off to this town when you were going southbound.
3, And for an extra brownie point, the name of the service area as you climbed up the valley just past the turn off and which brand of fuel did they sell in the late 70âs and early 80âs.
Town: Limburg.
Hill: Catsback
Services: Limburg.
Fuel: my memory isnât that good.
Dave.
A not very interesting photo taken 76/78 in Damman, This was an accommodation project being established for Brit workers
it was so hot and the unloaders were working in boiler suits,

Well done Dave , there is nothing wrong with your memory mate.
The fuel station belonged to AGIP, their sign was a black dragon on a yellow background, I canât remember seeing that many AGIP fuel stations in West Germany as AGIP was an Italian oil company.
Dreva, if you can find any of my old photo on other threads then you can gladly repost them as I think that a lot of the old ones have been removed. I have noticed that some of them have appeared on other websites which I donât mind but if they are photos that I have posted from other people then I think that itâs only fair that they get credited for them.
What connection ( if any ) do you have with Dow Freight ? did your Dad ever drive for them ? . I know that you once sent me a P.M. about your Dad who drove down to the Middle East and you said that you had loads of his old photos so it would be great if you could post them on this thread.
Regards Steve.

Great photo Fred, maybe it was only 35 Celsius and thats why they needed to get rugged up . Was that a M.A.N. or a Saviem that you had there
, my guess is itâs a 16.240 column change M.A.N.

Hi Steve, yes it was a M.A.N but a 232 culumn change and about as strong as a peppermint, I had this tractor for about 3 years but it was hard work, it took it an hour to do 20 minutes, I bought it from a leasing company but it never let me down and I didnât loose any money on it when I flogged it to a small haulier in Woking Surrey, I then happened to be in the right place at the right time and went on for Grangewoodâs and had my first experience of a 141 - WOW - what power phew !! Regards Fred
Hi Steve - my last post reminded me of a time when I was at the stadium in Instantbull and was doing a trip for DOWâs, as I remember I was waiting for clearance or whatever and I went with one of DOWâs drivers and helped him deliver some engines
(I think ) and it must have been a regular job of DOWâs as he went straight to the factory and I now wondered if it was you â â
and if it was then you forgot to pay me !!! Regards Fred
Me and the wife are still â â â â â â â â compatable - - - - We both get a head-ache at the same time
Hi Fred
I think I have covered this in an earlier thread somewhere, but It was back in 1978 when the Ogem site was being built on the Dammam to Khobar Road. It consisted of 32 high rise apartment blocks and was not that far out from the football stadium, which if you remember was located on the corner at the traffic lights.
Rynart had a dozen or so trucks on the project when they were working internals.
ALVBâŚâŚRDF
What year was that Fred, we did many loads for Fords from Daventry and Perkins from Peterborough to Istanbul. I also took engines to Ankara and Izmir which was as least one load a week but I canât remember if the B.M.C. factory was in Izmir or Istanbul , hopefully somebody will remember. If somebody owed you some money then it must of been the other bloke
.
Regards Steve.
another reasonable question ignored what a surprise

Thanks for that interesting bit of info RDF you have got to be right on that but how on earth do you remember all that detail, when I was on sight at that place I had a very welcomed shower until I went to rinse myself and the water was so hard that it would not rinse the soap off, I always remember that. - I have got 23 diaries in my archives and my wife is always suggesting that I get stuck into them and have a stroll down memory lane, I remember that our old mate âSnowyâ (RIP) had a detailed account of all of his trips and I would bet that many old muckers out there have diaries tucked away - Come on lads lets here some comments on this eh ?Regards Fred

Hi Dreva, I certainly do not wish to throw sât in the fan but you have passed this comment before on the thread, and if it refers to me then all I can say with respect is that we are not all on the thread 24 hrs; a day and I think that my post raised a bit of interest
donât you â â have a nice day - Regards Fred,
i was always taught not to ignore people.but that dont count for some on here
Hi Steve, the BMC factory was in Izmir.

Dreva, I donât think its a difficult question, and I donât think people are being rude, Itâs probably a case of âdoes anyone give a tossâ ?
The old case of people who talk about all theyâve done, are usually the oneâs whoâve done the least !
like a lot of people on here, I never had the opportunity to do the middle east, being too young at the time, I look back in awe and with envy to those who did it in the 70âs.
I was fortunate enough to be invited to Ashleyâs book launch last year, where I had the pleasure to meet, Bob Paul, Gordon Pearce, John Frost, Peter Cannon, Bobby Vallas, Ron Bell, Tony Soameson, Charlie Norton, Terry Tott, Frank Hook, Dave Poulton, Joe bowser, John Bruce, Roger Haywood, Nick Bull⌠amongst others, All were extremely nice , modest men, who must have done , millions of kilometers between them.
Dave Poulton did 123 trips in his sixteen years at Astran, then many more working for other companyâs⌠When I asked him to sign my book 'he replied " Donât know what all the fuss is about, Iâm only a lorry driver"
Enough said !!!
Jerry
Can you guys tell me the best motor to have on the middle east run? The F88/89 or scania 110/140 are the most obvious but having ridden in both the scania has way more room but my number 1 all time truck is the
F88! never having driven any i cant say to drive. But lets say breakdown and living space.
best truck for the 60`s
best truck in the 70`s
best truck in the 80`s
