I have just found this in the photo shoebox, can anybody remember where it was taken.

Regards Steve.

Mmmmm!! Hazarding a guess at Erdine■■?
rgds Ron

Hi Ron, yes I must admit that I thought that it was Edirne BUT  when you look at the signpost as Ian pointed out it says Istanbul straight on and the Mosque is on the right. Now A.F.A.I.R. after you crossed the bridge when you got to Edirne the Mosque was on your left wasn’t it ? . Wasn’t there a rumour that when this Mosque was built it had 999 windows or was that another Mocamp Myth  .
Now looking carefully at the photo it looks like it was taken from the passenger side of the vehicle as it seems to show a lot through the of the center of the windscreen looking over towards the right. I now realise that my wife took this photo just after we got married and we were on our honeymoon trip to Istanbul :sunglasses: . After cancelling a day at Kavala  we crossed the border at Ipsala so this photo could of been taken while we were going through Kesan or Tekirdag.

Regards Steve.

Jamie, just checked out your model, WOW! That is some serious detail you’re putting into that, I’m impressed

Hi Steve,

If, as you say, you entered Turkey via Ipsala then obviously the photo couldn’t have been taken in Edirne. However there are minarets on the left side too and is the 4th sign down showing Tekidag/Ipsala turn right? Not sure about that though. It’s difficult to read.

There again, I must admit that the only time I ever went via Ipsala was before my lorry driving days as a backpacker in about 1968/69 taking the bus from Ipsala to Istanbul. A white knuckled ride where I wasn’t looking out of the window too much.  As a driver I always went via Bulgaria. It does look like the photo was taken from the right side of the vehicle so either the passenger (your wife) took it or you had a rhd wagon at the time.
rgds Ron

Iam in the process of restoring an f89 (reg -ALP 61S).Its first owner was PIEinternational and then later on in life White trux of Dover, so it has obviously been on ME work.A guy called John Buckle used to drive it for White trux and i have been in contact with his son Julian. Does any of you ME veterans have any history or photos of this truck as i would be very interested in hearing from you, many thanks Dave.

Hi Steve, this maybe the same mosque taken from another angle, it is the Eski Mosque in Edirne, its on Londra Cadesi( London Road ) which was in those days the main road from Kapikule to Istanbul.

Dave.

I have just been talking to Dave Mackie and I think that he is right about that photo of the Mosque, as he pointed out the Eski Mosque was on the right hand side of London Road in Edirne on the way to Istanbul. The big Mosque on the left was the Selimiye Mosque which had allegedly 999 windows, so well done Dave and well done Ron as I did have a right hand drive wagon at the time  .
I bet that you can guess where Dave Shawcross took this one as well  .

Hi Tetragaz, I for one would love to see that article about Bob Kilby so can you post it up please. I am sure that Irish John Conneely would love to see it too as he used to work for Bob.

Hi Ron, as I think that you were the nearest, you are the winner  . There was a small clue in there but I don’t think that anybody else picked up on it  .
Somebody asked me ages ago ( I can’t think who it was now  ) if I remember Stevie Nicks an owner driver from Liverpool who used to do Middle East in the 70’s. Well here is a photo from Terry Smith showing Stevie and Howard Hughes R.I.P.

Orient Mack asked if anybody had any photos of old Turkish companies so he might recognise the cab of this old Fiat.

Now, can anybody remember where this photo was taken ?.

P.S. I love Ferdy’s black Tee shirt. Trucking might not be as good as ■■■ but with ■■■ you are always sure of where you are trying to get to  .

Nice to see Howard Hughes (RIP) mentioned - What a character, always good company, last time I was in his company was an overnight homebound at Mama,s at Spefeld
that man knew every trick in the book, I fell about laughing listening to his antics and ducking and diving, dont know if they were true or not but they made good
llistening - RIP Howard - you will be long remembered. Fred H

It’s good to hear from you Fred, now how about trying to get some of your old Polariods on here  .

Dont mention polaroids - I have sorted a lot of pic’s out of my album and I even found them interesting as I had not looked at them for so long then I spent
HOURS AND HOURS in “Be patient mode” trying to conquer the skills of presenting them on here but to no avail ‘BUT’ I will get there in the end - I have all of the info and follow the destructions but it goes all technical - why dont they give this info in plain language for idiots? - I have scanned them ok (I think) then It takes me ages trying to locate where they have gone - If you want a laugh this is the placce to be - So watch this space - Regards Fred H
