Sorry if its been answerd/asked before, but what happened to the lorries used in destination doha, as in where are they now? Just curious… I have read this whole thread from start to finish ages ago, but cant remember if it said anywhere. Also tried a search but its not the easiest thing to search for-loads of hits on related topics!
Cheers lads…
I doubt very much if any of the trucks are still in exsistence. The Marathon (SLO 707R) was loaned by British Leyland for the film but was very unreliable. Afterwards it went back to BL and later was sold onto a transport co in Fareham Hants. Scania 110, GUL 599N was part ex’d by Astran for a new 111. Scania 140, NVW 484P was again part ex’d but no details I’m afraid. I’ll ask my mate Postman Paul to run a DVLA check. He’s good at that sort of thing
If you want to see some really great photos of these trucks in action in the film, you could always buy my book from Old Pond Publishing (tel; 01473 238200). Theres a whole chapter dedicated to Dest Doha Ash.
Bud,Mr richmond, its me,but it wasnt actualy a case of having the dummy over its just that i aint been back since the trip when i double shunted 2 trailers across from the dummys to qatar. To help me out he said i could settle him up on my return to jordan,so hopefully i may be back enroute to doha in a week or so and as you no the only way to swerve him is to transit iraq and to be honest i would rather pay him what i owe than face being captured by the nasties in iraq…have you seen BANGED UP ABROAD lately.
oooops i think possibly i may owe the grease propshaft man in babelhawa as well, somebody sais he may have gone skint due to greasing props on tick,…80p i think he charged…
Please, dont spoil it for me, its the only bit of pleasure i get from him, he always brings the letter out, we make aeroplane signs and say, about two weeks, he is heartbroken…lol !Now that bjorn dont go its the only sport we get there…

Its always good to hear new tales and memories from back in the day on the road to the M/E so if you have any more then post them up!!
Any pics you may have are equally well received so get scanning!!

“Are You Sure ? or are you on something!” ? Or what ? Yes we all knew these blokes. What are you trying to say ? Shotguns ? Birds in the Trees ? This just doese’nt make any sense at all. Try again. Maybe we will understand second time around.
Cheers, Archie
p.s. The best lads that I remember from the Colnebrook lot were from Pan Express, Big Rod, Nick the Greek and Tony Khan (Brown Bear) all of them were really great .

A pal of mine,Malcolm Roberts from Manchester used to drive for Concorde many years ago,did you know him UR ?
Hi - Sorry but I did not make any reference re: Malcolm from Manchester concorde but I find it very interesting that you have contacted me, You mentioned Barry Longden who I know very well and I am in close contact with him, I first met Barry when we were snowed up for four days at Imranli on route to Teheran in 76, would appreciate a bit more info about yourself as I wondered if I know you - I would mention that I am new to this site and you are my first contact, I have spent many long hours reading thru the endless pages on this site and found them most interesting and seeing a multitude of names that were lost but not forgotten and I was amazed to see that I got mention of page 73, I was with Pan-express - Grangewood - and Concorde, - Cheers for now, hoping to hear from you and any more old Jockeys out there - regards FH

Hi “freshir”, was that in the winter 75/76 when you were caught in the snow on Imramli? I have related a story about being stuck in a blizzard on the mountain on Imramli on “Simon International” page 3 on this forum. Just wondered if you were one of the drivers there at that time?

I presume Billy Hamm had the Chapman and Ball Mack, and his wooden leg of course.
Hi Ian re: Bionic Bill, sure enough he did have his wooden peg, I made telephone contact with you some 3-4 years back for a quick chat re an article you made somewhere along the line that I found quite interesting, also some years back when Pan-Express went bust I was contacted by Ray Phillips your old boss and I ended up doing a trip for him with a promise of a second (Dangling a carrot) as I recall I took a load of paper to Austria and when I returned to Loughton I submitted my expences and gave him some change out of my running money to which he remarked that it was a first , I was offered a second trip with a view to a full time start but it was a bit too far for me to travel from Woking, soon after that I went on for Grangewood’s a period that I thoroughly enjoyed, so no prizes for returning running money and I sure that the other Expo jockey’s would not have appreciated me, Nice to hear from you Ian - Regards Fred H

Hi where r u - I find the names that you mentioned re; Concorde, Grangewoods, Pan Ex; interesting along with the names that you mentioned, I am puzzled as to who you are, I know all of the drivers mentioned, they are all experienced M/E drivers and would offer some interesting experiences, we ran and rubbed shoulders with all of the big boys and knew them very well in our day, So if you reckon that this site is getting a bit run down lets hear from you please - Incidently I was with Concorde in 89.
