What a brilliant idea.
Ashley… what do you reckon?
And also it would be the perfect antidote to some of the bashing that the industry is getting at the moment.

Hello all
Just watched Destination Doha what a priceless piece of filming of four professional men doing there job and having a laugh.I take my hat off to all of you that done M/E.Does anyone know the ages of the drivers when it was filmed■■?
Just started watching Destination Doha part 3 not having seen it since the original on the Beeb and remembered that the lad in the trenchcoat and long hair and having a ■■■ during the skiing weekend was Kenny Maynard the son of an old friend of mine Malcolm Maynard who passed away early last year. Malcolm used to sub to Davis Turner with a couple of Scammell Crusaders in the early 70’s running to Iran and many other M/E destinations and Kenny used to drive with him even though he was too young to pass his HGV but once outside the EEC as it was called in those days who cared. I had forgotten how bloody frustrating it could be doing German/Austrian customs at Salzburg, just as you thought you’d nailed the process the papers would be thrown back at you with no explanation and the window slammed shut in your face or was that just me, leaving you to try and figure out where you had gone wrong. A lot easier when somebody discovered the Czech-Hungary route. Does anybody know if it’s possible to get Dest Doha on DVD on a USA format although I may be able to hack my player to multiregion.
mother trucker:
hi exmoor badger
it snows up shipka in the bloody summer one hell of a road, traffic not to bad now the other road from veliko tarnovo to stara zagora has been improved all the transit trucks go that way .is there a company in uk called animals express i was on the motorway coming from sofia this morning looked very much like a uk livestock vehicle heading towards sofia

Stara Gazora in the mid '70’s.

Chazzer… I thought it was just me, although I never did M/E , I do remember the first time i went through Germany with a truck, ( I had been with a 35cwt merc in 73) but I had all my paper work thrown back at me hatch slamed shut,by a young German, no explanation. A Norweigen driver saw what happened and sat down with me and put me right, and I have to say that when I went for the passport stamp, an older German who had seen this episode, said to me in English, he was sorry for the way the yonger German had behaved, it gave me hope.

The Maggies would be OK there “George” they didn’t need anti freeze and it wasn’t that far to tow them back to the “shop”!!! Air Cool rules!!! Dennis.
28-08-10: Spotted parked up on A13 Westbound, just before the Dartford Tunnel junction.

That curtainsider is a disgrace, it’s not worthy of the name on its side, probably full of bricks or bags of sand ![]()
As a driver you could have some fun with it though, especially if it did have a load of sand in the back ![]()

But their ■■■■■■ deisel fiters used to jelly up every half hour in extreme temps! Hopeless machines ,Summer & Winter IMO.

Hi Terry; No you are NOT missing any parts of the film. Unfortunately you have a fairly “rough” copy from e bay. If you would like a 100%, mint film, with every little detail in perfect quality…then contact Old Pond Publishing - 01473 238200. They will be able to sort you one out.
Then you will be able to enjoy the BEST FILM EVER TO BE MADE! ![]()

Out of interest, can any of the our ex M/E drivers enlighten us as to where this is??
Eastern Europe into Turkey area??
Also what time period would that have been, late 70s or early 80s maybe??

It looks familiar, and i will have Two goes First it looks a bit like the parking next to the Polis kontrol as you entered Aksaray from Ankara. and second it could be one of the many times that the Londra camping altered the parking in the late seventies ,early eighties. Regards Jamie.
A Scot Lost in the Valley’s
To me its looking like the new parking lot of the londra camping early 70’s, once they relize that they where making good money with orverland trucks coming from Europe
The Mercedes is a swiss one
been at the Londra Camping one year ago, its now totaly inside of the city and no more a parking place but a karting track…

Hi Bullitt, Carl and all: This is the MO CAMP, Istanbul. Early 1970’s. Photo taken by Gordon Pearce. He took 3 photos at this point. There is a Swiss Merc and what looks very much like an English F88 (headboard gives it away). Not sure about the Scania (left of pic).
Here are Gordon’s pics and for everyone who has my book, see pages 216 & 217. ![]()
Close up of the Astran trucks. Left to right; JLB 279K (Avis truck hire) driven by Bun Parlane. TDX 400K driven by Bobby Vallas. BGH 172H driven by Gordon.

From the back of Gordon’s truck.

The “famous” image that’s been seen many times. Gordon in red speedos
Bobby 2nd from left. Bun far right. Gordon is pretty sure the others were Australian backpackers/travellers.
