Hi Guys

I will change the subject ,anyone who knows me might remember my Brother Pete ,he did a couple of trips with me to Baghdad for Astrans and a few for Intersped to Greece ,Pete was a Drummer in a very popular Band called the Dominos, the band folded in the late 80s but Pete carried on playing as a session drummer,
I have just heard that he has hooked up with Alan Silson the lead gutarist and original starter of Smokie (living next door to Alice )all the older guys must remember this band 14 uk no one hits ,
The best part is that I might be back on the road with a new Truck on tour with the band ,so keep your elbow’s in will put Pics up when I get them

Roger Haywood

ALICE !, ALICE !, Who the (Z.B.) is Alice.

Hi Roger, I still prefer Chubby Browns version of that song but I hope all goes well with you becoming a roady and if you get a gig with The Beverly Sisters for three weeks in Athens ( eat your heart out Jacko 22 ) then I am sure that you will get plenty of offers for a second man to go with you  .
Anyway what does one have to do to revive this old thread from page three before it gets buried in the sands of time for ever. It did cross my mind to send a telex to Ron’s Middle East Recovery Service c/o The Harbour Inn, Piraeus but I went round there a couple of weeks ago and I just couldn’t work out where we all used to park. There is a huge brand new cruise terminal roughly in the same area with a couple of flyovers not far from Saint Nicks Church but it seemed to me to be very confusing although the traffic was certainly flowing a lot better.

It was great to meet up again with a lot of the old Dow lads some of whom brought a load of old photos along which I shall post on here sometime in the near future.
Terry Smith gave me this one, I know that a lot of you cleared customs here many years ago but where is it and who’s is that yellow and red Volvo parked on the end ?.

Jimmy Walker gave me these two, I hope that you are paying attention Bullitt as this is a photo of your wife’s Uncle Stan although I am sure that she recognises him. He must have been in his late fifties or early sixties when this was taken but as you can see he’s not in bad condition for his age as he was still able to strip down and rebuild a tilt without any body’s help. As you can see he’s useing a big dollop of lard :unamused: as a lot of lads didn’t like to carry olive oil in glass bottles in the cab. I hope that they are English eggs Stanley as I remember you once said “ you never know where foreign eggs come from ” :unamused: .

Here is another photo from Jimmy Walker, I have my own idea where this was taken but I would like to hear from you guys just where you think it is before I give the answer.

And finally as I have been going through my old photo shoebox, I remember, somewhat vividly taking this photo in the 80’s and the story behind it but can anybody else throw some light on it or did you ever see it in Saudi or Kuwait ?.

Let’s hope that we can keep this thread going at least until Ashley’s book comes out when I am sure that it will receive a bit more input.

Regards Steve.

Hi Steve photo’ on the mountain looks like Bolu.

Dave

That photo of the guy next to the woman, looks very much like Ken Corrigan from Manchester, the Fiat’s tel number on the door is a Newton Heath/Failsworth,Manchester number,Harry Savage had a Fiat, and he was from Moston Manchester, although I thought his Fiat was all white,no red, perhaps I’m mistaken!

Take it easy!

Is this a joke :unamused: - or dont you really know that PWM 116T was Roger’s truck…

Afraid I cant help with faces much - I only knew voices and truck numbers really - oh, and the address where to send the cheque. So if that’s Ken Corrigan, I did used to load him but that’s the first time I have known what he looks like. Did he work for RJ International?

Bloody Hell…thought it was the father-in-law come back for a minute (RIP Malc)!!!

Hi Steve, nice to hear from you again and thanks for dragging this thread back onto the front page again! Looks like the trucknet/Astran/M.E. bubble may have burst sadly

That pic of stan is just like seeing apic of his brother, didnt realise they were so alike!! And yes, I can believe the comment about the “foreign eggs”!!

Looks like he is cooking on the side of his F12, didnt it have a (feathered) birds name…“osprey” possibly!!

Seems like you had a good trip this time…how many nights out was this one!!

Love the new pics, look forward to hearing the stories behind them and seeing some more of your new collection!!

Many thanks once again steve, and come on lads, surely all you M/E guys cant have run dry of anicdotes, tales and pics from back in the day!!

Cheers, bullitt.

Hi Dave, I also think that photo is somewhere on Bolu but I seem to remember that the road surface wasn’t as good as it looks in that photo all the way to Ankara :unamused: . Mind you, looking at the amout of oil and grease that appears to be building up it would only need a small shower to turn it into a skating rink :open_mouth: .
Correct 5th wheel  it is Ken Corrigan who was a very old friend of Stan Warmbold and John Roberts, three owner drivers who lived near to each other and started driving down to Iran and Pakistan in the early seventies.
Yes, well spotted Sheeplady but I was rather hoping that Roger might of recognised it and he might remember where the photo was taken or if he remembers having a few Efes with Terry Smith  . I think that you could be right about Ken Corrie, he may of done some loads for R.& J.
Yes bullitt, Stans blue Volvo F12 was called Osprey but I can’t remember if his earlier Foden which he wrote off one winter in Czecho had a name  .
I thought that Routier ?, might of recognised the guy who is stood next to the lad who is wearing the Whittle T-shirt and as I don’t know who the Whittles driver is I was hoping that somebody might know him.
And the photo of the Middle East Minerals Scania, well I seem to think that the drivers name was Barry who was from the North East and might ( although I am not sure ) of worked at one time for Taffy Davis, Duncan Macrea or Audrey at A LIne but I do remember that a few drivers knew him so I don’t think that he was a one tripper. You have got to admit that the belly tank on that stepframe trailer was a bit of North East engineering at it’s best  .

Regards Steve.

Hi Steve Ken did a lot of work for RJ, he finished up with with a right cushy number, “The Diplomatic Bag” to Prague, only in this case it was a twenty foot container, once he crossed the D/CZ border it was non stop to The British Embassy in Prague, if for any reason the seal was tampered with, the complete container was turned round & returned to the UK.

Anyone know what happened to Ken Corrigan,John Roberts or Harry Savage? I drove with all three of them @ Humber McVeigh’s Salford,we all lived within a mile of each other,East Manchester,early/mid 70’s

Take it easy

David

Does anyone recall the driver of a BLACK sleeper Scania 110,IIRC the lettering on the cab was in red and was something like Trans Arabian International Transport Services,B & W of Hyde,nr Manchester supplied it,I was there when it was in for spraying in the 70’s.

Steve,on further reflection,I DO think that the guy the other side of the female IS Harry Savage,I remember him with a full head of dark hair though,so its difficult to imagine after some 35 years!!..and as you have remembered,Ken,John,Stan and Harry all lived close to each other and drove together whenever possible,be good to meet up again, although I am aware of the sad demise of Stan.

Rgds,

David

Asked by Stanfield to put this one on for you M/E lads, it was taken by him at the Cheshire Run last weekend.

Just a thought but with the mention of East Manchester, did any of you do work out of Constantine Lloyds at Newton Heath back in the 70’s.

Yes Tipit,Humber McVeighs used to collect packing cases from there,I remember collecting some, perhaps for some engineering companies goods?.or have got the wrong company??

David :unamused:

Tipit, further thought, wasnt Constantine Lloyds on Grimshaw Lane, just down from Mather & Platts,I feel fairly confident in saying their old building is still there?

Take it easy,

That’s it they did make up wooden packing cases, I was an 18 year old with an under 3 ton u.l.w. TK in and out of there all the time with Alec Sharples (Salford) fetching loose stuff in and crates out to the docks. :unamused: No big wheelin’ for me eh !
My first sighting of watching tilts being stripped down was in there, there was a blue Berliet (old round cab) who use to be a regular in there each week with a little Frenchman, who would spend all day in their loading on machinery from Mather & Platts.
Thanks for the memory … now I’ll let you M/E men get back to your talk again.

just to keep the thread off-topic for one more post - they were certainly still going end of last year as Con-Lloyd, collected a tyre making machine that they had crated for going to poland

Hi Steve, regarding the middle east minerals 142, you are correct it was driven by Barry Bradshaw an ex Duncan McCrae driver from the Darlington area. Middle East Minerals was a company which had their head office on the Island of Arran where they had Quarry interests. They believe it or not, had a very succesful business selling Sand to the Arabs. They purchased three bonnetted double drive 142’s with wide tipping trailers, these trailers were loaded with screening plant equipment and fitted with sheets to T.I.R. spec. I think that the units were taken to Baghdad solo and sat there idle for over a year. They bought the 142 that is in the picture to supply the site in Iraq and it was driven by Barry Bradshaw. On one of his trips with a tipper trailer behind him he, whilst in convoy with a few british lads was involved in a multiple accident on black ice in southern Yugoslavia. The 142 was extensively damaged to the front and was taken back to the Scania dealer at Ghent Belgium by low loader. This is may’be when this photo was taken??
Their Manager in Iraq, who came from Carlisle, decided to bobtail from Iraq to Gevgellia with one of the bonnetted 142’s to recover the trailer. I caught up with them at Incillat and we set off from there together. It appeared that the rear axle propshaft had mangled a UJ so they had taken this off and then found out that it would not drive with the rear prop removed so by engageing the interaxle diff lock they had traction, but not for long they came to a grinding halt and that was the end of the 142’s recovery escapade, it was now its turn to go on the bar. We changed over trailers as his had a towbar fitted on the back, and set off for Iraq. I was in crawler going over the mountain south of Zahko and can remember Barry walking allongside as we went down the other side. He was going from wheel to wheel feeling them for overheating as we crawled down the mountain. We arrived at their compound near the Kahrk water complex just outside Baghdad without further incident where i was treated to a night in camp before carying on alone to Oman. Someone told me that Barry and M.E.M. had parted company the following year after he had rolled one of the trucks in Iraq.
Regards Jamie.

Brilliant Jamie  , you have just answered a question that I have been wondering about for over 25 years. When the driver told me that I thought is he pulling my leg  , in fact for some reason I thought that the driver who I once met at the Turkish border was Alan Jones because I thought that he was wearing glasses. When Bestbooties mentioned Alan a couple of years back on Trucknet I was going to contact Ian and ask him if he knew if Alan had ever worked for Middle East Minerals but I never got around to it. There is a bit more to this story and if I get a bit of spare time this week I shall try and write it down and maybe you might of heard something similar  .

Regards Steve.
