Astran / Middle East Drivers

What a shame that they made so many mistakes on that model.

Just heard the sad news of Roger Haywood’s sudden death in Sweden.

Hi Kenny, that is bad news, poor old Rita. I only ran with him once when we were parked up during the Friday afternoon driving ban in Czechoslovakia in the early eighties but we did exchange quite a bit of banter many years later when he joined Trucknet.
I feel really gobsmacked at the moment.

R.I.P. Roger.

Roger and Terry Smith parked up in Izmir.

RIP Roger. Robert

There’s a lot too much dust being bitten these days.

RIP Roger.

We met maybe 6 times on the road. Last time was about 83 in southern Turkey where we had a problem. You stayed with us for a while. That gesture was much appreciated.
RIP Roger.

Such a sad loss I was absolutely stunned when Kenny Ward phoned me with the sad news this morning - Roger was a true veteran, I last see him at Gaydon a few years ago and we were discussing his move to Sweden, RIP old mate - Sincere condolences to the family

What a sad loss!

RIP Roger.

Very sad news about Roger, had’nt seen him since I stopped doing greece at the beginning of the 90’s but had some banter with him on Trucknet over the years. RIP old chum, there’s going to be a lot of miles done in the great truckstop in the sky with the amount of old pals that have passed away this year.

Very sorry to hear about Roger!! Like you Charlie I hadn’t seen him since the nineties!
Ran with him regularly on Greek trips & a few times down to Baghdad!
He was a mass of contradictions but when you knew him he was both kind & helpful!
He was a great cook & could conjure up some great meals out of that side box!
Spent a week with him at the telex in Ankara waiting for Iraqi visas & I must have put
two stone on that week!
I’ll miss his posts on here & my thoughts go out to his family.

I am trying to contact Peter Cannon Ex transport manager from Asian Transport as I also worked for Asian Transport in the 1970 - 76 if any one has Email address for Peter please PM or give him my which is johnholland042@gmail.com I would appreciate it. Regards John Holland

Hi Folks! My name is Tony Ive. I drove for Astran from about the time they changed names. When Peter Cannon phoned me offering me a job it was Asian Transport. When I started it was Astran.

I got the job because one of their drivers broke his ankle or leg in Holland, he was operating a rover permit in Europe. The truck, an Avis Volvo F88 No VVU 348 L was parked up at Rynarts. I operated in Europe for 6 weeks then got a load home. I think I did 2 Europe trips and asked for a change. My next trip was to Bahgdad, Bahsra and Kuwait reload hazel nuts from Ordu on the Black Sea. I think I knew most of the drivers although the way trips worked out you could never be sure. I knew ■■■■ Snow, Bob Vallas, Jeff Ruggins. When I first met Peter Cannon he was a driver, I worked for I. Barget Ltd. Peter was doing a turn round in Harwich, I wont tell you the reason, it was his business. He was TM when he phoned me. For some reason I thought John Williams was know as Diesel Dan. Dave Paulson was a quiet thoughtful bloke. I also remember Bobby Brown who was Adrian Street’s wrestling partner, he didn’t work for Astran. There were quite a few wrestlers who did the M/E run. Unusually it seems, I didn’t much like ■■■■ Snow. Bob Vallas and Jeff Ruggins were ace. A few other people that come to mind are Packy Ray, I think he was a butcher or had a butcher’s shop. He used to run to Pakistan using a British truck that he built a sleeper section on. Then there was Ray Illingham, I think he drove a Mack. After a couple or so years the new boys started in their hundreds. Yiddle Davis sent a few trucks over, I think they got as far as the Mocamp before they ran out of money. No one wanted to know them, too many spare wheels went missing along with fuel. Pony Express started they did manage to keep going. It was quite amazing how many others only got as far as the Mocamp. I used to laugh at the number who got there and parked up waiting for the snow to stop or melt. I remember Bob Paul had a mug on his desk with "The Handsome One"written on it. I’m not sure if Caroline or his son gave it to him. Tony Soameson was in the office at that time, I think he was sales manger. The office was at Chislehurst at that time. I also remember that the great majority of my telexes only stated, “No Problems regards Tony”. Their paperwork was that good. My biggest moan was having to wait for a week in Ordu while letters of credit were confirmed. Most of my trips turned right at Ankara. Peter seemed to insist on sending me East during the winter. During one trip to Teheran, I met up with Jeff Ruggins and Bobby Brown. Apparently there were in the Pension Suisse and a couple of Germans from Kuhne and Nagel along with some other drivers. The two Germans decided they wanted to fight the English. Big mistake Jeff was ex SAS and Bobby was a big time professional wrestler. Jeff and Booby avoided it by going out to lunch. When they got back the Germans were still there and even more insistent, they got their wish a more than a few bruises. The manager of the Pension Suisse sent Bob Paul a letter explaining it was not Jeff’s fault and that the bill was being sent to Kuhne and Nagel. Luckily Bob got the letter before he heard any rumours.

I think it’s about time I shut up, all the best everyone. Tony Ive.

Thanks Tony. For anyone who went there, or anyone who’s just interested, that was a piece of history!

John.

Some good stuff their Tony, welcome to the forum!! I think there are still a few ex Astran / Asian Transport drivers here so im sure they may pop up, “Truckyboy” being one of them. If you have any photos of your travels from back then then please feel free to post them up here. They always create a lot of interest and comments.
