Hi Robert those two photos must have been taken within 50 metres of each other albeit at vastly different times of the year. Thanks for sharing them.
I remember going up bolu around 1981 and overtaking a Bulgarian Mercedes 1932, or similar, then once in front feeling very nervous as to how the truck and I would fair with the snow and ice on the accent in winter and being in front meant the other drivers following were holding back to see if I made any schoolboy errors getting stuck or worse…
Thankfully Scandinavian engineering, a 141 and two pairs of underpants prevailed…

All the very best,

Cheers Mick! Even now it’s a dual carriageway it’s a bit of a scary road with death-defying overtaking going on. I ran with a bloke who broke down halfway up it (going up) in the snow. Fortunately, we were able to pull off the road at that point. Robert

This weeks cm is a must for all astrans fans
Thanks for the heads up Seth70! I’ve just read it and it’s a damned good interview with good pics: Will Shiers interviews Peter Cannon. All straight from the shoulder, no-nonsense communication. I recommend it. Cheers, Robert
Photos from the album, the first one taken of Billy Thomas and myself in Koper in 1980, the second one of Billy and myself
taken in Brynmawr, South Wales,in November 2014, what a difference. It was good meeting up with Billy after all these years
we had a good chat of the old days and how everything has changed now.

Well I was one who never ventured into M/E transport like so many of you on here but I posted a picture on Davies International site as I was the founder of that company of a Barry.A.Titterall out of East India Dock Road, London. truck that showed me the way over Mont Cenis on my first trip to Italy. They both Had 140 Scania’s and me being in a lowly 110 had a job to keep up, any way the son of a driver sent me some shots of his fathers trucks, he worked for Astran and many other companies and here are a few he sent me. Any one recognise any of the trucks, the chap in question has the surname Hollands. He says he has loads of pics to send so will post when they arrive, cheers Buzzer.
Love the bucket hanging off the bumper in the last pic . You were never a “proper” Long Distance / Continental driver unless you had one of those.
Of course there was always the risk of what your work mates may leave in it if left unattended for a period of time!!

After my first trip, and having done a fair bit of France, where there were many ‘squat’ bogs, I decided to do something about it. I bought a cheap plastic seat from B&Q, then made a wooden frame the same shape. On the bottom I attached three legs with hinges, so it folded up flat. You can imagine how this was greeted by the average ‘spread tandem’ driver - but after the initial laughter, they all borrowed it!
The father and son team who ran the brown Volvos of ‘Bunnor Asian’, both huge blokes, inevitably known as ‘the big men’ who were part of my first ‘convoy’ through Germany and Eastern Europe, I seem to remember had one of those ‘TIR’ in a white circle on a red background, trailers, on their artic (one had a road train). Anyone else remember them?
