Astran / Middle East Drivers

I worked for Hicks in the early 80’s, but cant put names to any of the drivers, I am trying to remember, the mind is working overtime.

FFS,if you look at my post above, you will see I have named this Hick’s driver as Dennis McCarthy!

Well done bestbooties it is of course Dennis McCarthy when he drove for Hick’s, in fact here he is again with most of Peter Wall. I can’t remember where this photo was taken but I seem to remember that one of the Hick’s drivers had a problem at the time and we had just finished sorting it out.

Gordon John, I think that we have all forgotten more names and faces than we can remember but any memories that you can share with us would be most welcome.

And Ray Nicholls, Trucker Ash e-mailed me one of his photos of Super Simon in Davis Turner colours when I joined Trucknet and I thought that he might of reshown it for you. If he doesn’t see your post by the week end then I don’t think that he we mind if I repost it for him.

Hi Steve, Dennis McCarthy passed away a few years ago, whilst sitting in his armchair one evening, at his home in Port Talbot.
I was told a few months ago that Peter “the Plater” Wall has returned to live in Wales after having lived for quite a few years in Turkey. The last time I spoke with him was at Alfie Jones’s Funeral in Bedwas. best regards jamie.

I was thinking the same thing

I am not sure if I have posted this photo before, Pete was sat in the front with the taxi driver while John Bruce, Dennis McCarthy, my wife and myself were sat in the back going over The Galata Bridge in Istanbul in 1987. We got in at The Mocamp and agreed a price and set off towards the Blue Mosque but just before we reached the city Pete who was having a conversation with the driver in Turkish suddenly told him to stop the car and told all of us to get out. Pete told us that the driver had said that it was now going to charge us more for some reason or another and Pete said we would all get out and that he was getting nothing. After ten minutes of standing on a hot and dusty road with Pete and the driver shouting and pretending to slap each others face, Pete told us all to get back in the taxi so that we could continue our journey. By the time we had reached the Blue Mosque Pete and the driver were best of friends and he even gave him a good tip, and a packet of Marlborough. It turned out to be a great day, full of laughs and it usually was when you were running with The Plater.

I’ve found an editor I can work with and I’ve also got a cover design. Ed’s half way into the first one hopefully it’ll be out soon. There will be 5 books at approx 82,000 words per book.

I started on Carmans,(Brit European) in early '75 and did 1 year in a 290 F88.
We didn’t get the Transcons until '76,(P reg) and by that time I thought Goldy had emigrated to Oz with some hitch hiker he’d picked up,I could be wrong.
Although Goldy was based at Trowbridge where the other Transcon was based, but Dave Prosser had it from new at the same time I had the other one based at Stoke.
I will dig out my old passports and tell you when I did my first trip in the Transcon, that should fix a date.

I’ve just looked at that picture again, and that COULD be Goldy and not Maurice Gray, with the wild hair they do look similar, but Goldy did honk a bit,he was a tasty git!
It’s a pity we can’t see the registration number of the truck, that would place it.
