Astran / Middle East Drivers

If it was out of the UK in the 70’s 80’s really the only choice was Coles or Grove, Richardsons of Leicester were still making a few but they were very rare. Lieberherr are yellow but are from Germany so they would have to of been imported then exported if they went form the UK Have a look at this, I think yours would have been an earlier version of it. The one in your Turkish photo only has 2 axles. They were good for lifting about 25 tons close in and in the right hands could do a bit of fishing as well ( over reaching ) The height of the tires was about 6 feet.
Steve, in the last story of my book one, I told a tale about when I went to Poolewe collect tanks form and old oil rig plant. That was the kind of crane that came from Turriff, I’m pretty sure he ate a box of valiam on that trip. They were fine for getting round town or slow moving round a site but out on the road above 30mph they were a right arse twitchier.

I recently had this pic sent to me of KJN671P

This was originally a draw bar rigid but Astran cut it back to a tractor Barry Barnes drove it before Jerry Whelan had it as an owner driver on for Astran, I then bought it from him when he packed in being an owner driver.

Some other pics of KJN

Seen here on the way to Italy

Regards Pat

Excuse my ignorance having never been a scania man but why the 2 specs 140/141?
regards dave.

Hi Dave

I suspect it was a case of a little vanity as a 141 would appear to be better than a 140.

It was definitely a 140 though.

Regards Pat

Could have been a bit of skulduggery   as if that went on, the sun visor is different, so is the paint job, so it could have been changed during the conversion. Its great reading some of the stories we all had many to tell, but its good to refresh the memory.

Thank you gents for the replies I did think the answer would be in either area mentioned.
regards dave.

Is that you standing in front of that Scanny having a dip Dave ? looks like you have just negotiated a ‘Plus’
Regards Fred

Hi Mark, and welcome to trucknet. I am afraid that i must contradict you regarding the supply truck that your father drove for MEM. I was with him in dover docks when he had the problems with customs regarding the non payment of Vat and it was definately a cab over 142. He told me that his job was to take the plant and supplies overland to Iraq and this was his first load out. As the truck had been registered in the uk the customs were insisting that the vat had to be payed on it before they would allow it out of the country, that is what your father told me at the time.
The next time i met him was when i towed the bonneted 142 and tipper trailer across southern Turkey and Iraq to their depot near Bahgdad. This was after his accident in Yugo
regards Jamie.

hmmmmmm, i definitely remember a bull nose 142 parked outside my house.i never knew he drove a normal one but i know he was driving the bull nose when he got sacked in iraq due to the tipper trailer tipping other beacuse they told him he had to run fully freighted.it may be he did drove a normal 142 but i know 2 things he did pick a bullnose up from hull drove to darlo to stop over then to arran i think to get all the livery done then shipped straight out to iraq

here is a photo my dad took of a normal cab 142 maybe the one you met him in

Trying to remember how to upload photos.
Taken on Imranli, Eastern Turkey in Feb 1976, it was a hard old winter.
I was heading towards those guys in the photo, it was a slow and delicate slalom to get past,
and I had more chains on than Paul Newman in ‘Cool Hand Luke’.
It might rekindle a few nightmares for some of those still about.
It looks rather prettier now, than it seemed at the time, but I’m glad to have been there.

Do,s anyone know if Dave Chamberlain as moved in the last 30 yrs .Bazza would like to get in touch . Dave remember the F10 and the 2800?

When Dave went to the TT, he used to put a driver on his Scania, even the name has left me now but I remember it was quite funny in Evzoni when this “lady” broke into the foodbox because Dave owed her money for “something.”

If you can get Mr Chamberlain onto facebook, it would be great to see his bikes. I know someone who he used to knock about with him racing.

Moss or Moz was the drivers name

well boys it s obviously a coles crane I remember it very well lying dead by the roadside trip after trip jib run out and seemingly abandoned by whichever cretin was driving it god only knows what todays bunch of steering wheel attendants would of made of these sometimes difficult circumstances am now back in the uk and despite the somewhat onerous health and safety dictacts am managing to earn a respectful living for you steve corrie is still in the land of the living and brooksie has gone to Canada on his jollies but no doubt will visit flysheet whilst he s there greetings to all crow

Delighted to see you back on here geoff, missed your posts, hope all OK.

Cheerio for now.

Regarding Kenny Snooks, unfortunately Kenny died back in the early 90’s, of a heart attack I believe. I got to know him quite well and had sold him my tri axle Trailor some time before when he decided to become an o/d and operate from Greece. Nice guy and always ready to help someone in trouble on the road, he had recently got back together with his ex wife Yvonne and I think he remarried her. Unfortunately mechanical bad luck seemed to follow him as no matter what truck he bought was always breaking down and I imagine the stress of all that probably contributed to his demise.

Good to know that you have completed your community service Geoff, welcome back, have missed your contribution - Fred

Chris Hooper’ Transcon’. I don’t know him personally although I did briefly meet him once years ago, I just wondered how Chris Hooper is after seeing on here that he was ill a while back?

Heres a picture I’ve been asked post. It shows three South Wales based drivers on a middle east trip many years ago. We know who they are but do any of you old hands recognise them?
Neil.

I know the three of them but il wait and see

Is it Pat Seale in the middle ?
