Astigmatism - will this affect medical?

Hello all

I have my medical booked this friday and im aware that one of the questions asked is do you suffer with Glare at night. I do due to slight astigmatism of the eye, basically, mine a squashed a bit blurring objects on the horizontal (its very minor)

I do have corrective glasses, but i only ever use them for the computer/TV. ive never driven with them as feel fine on the road.

My question is this? Will answering yes to the above question on the medical have a negative effect on whether i pass?

Should i say that i wear glasses?

If anyone else has the same condition, it would be good to hear from you!

Thanks
Tom

It might be best going for an eye test at the opticians before Friday. They can fill the eyesight part of the form in rather than the doctor.

Also, if you need glasses for lorry driving, they can prescribe them and you’ll be all sorted.

If you fail the eye test with the doctor, you’ll only have to go to an opticians anyway.

Good luck

I have astigmatism. I had my eyes checked about two years ago. I now have glasses for reading stuff at distance I was told by the optician that my visual acuity was fine for passing the HGV medical requirements. I don’t have to wear them for driving but I wear them all the time. I can also read s number plate at the required distance even though I can just do it as it is a little blurry. I was informed I didn’t need to tell the DVLA that I wear glasses by the optician.
I can’t remember offhand the visual acuity that is required but that is the most important bit not whether you need to wear glasses or not.

Lorry and bus drivers

You must have a visual acuity at least 0.8 (6/7.5) measured on the Snellen scale in your best eye and at least 0.1 (6/60) on the Snellen scale in the other eye.

You can reach this standard using glasses with a corrective power not more than (+) 8 dioptres, or with contact lenses. There’s no specific limit for the corrective power of contact lenses.

You must have a horizontal visual field of at least 160 degrees, the extension should be at least 70 degrees left and right and 30 degrees up and down. No defects should be present within a radius of the central 30 degrees.

I have a slight astigmatism and need corrctive lenses for driving. Also have anti glare lenses on both my normal and spare pair of glasses as I am a night trunker and they really do make a difference so even if your astigmatism causes an issue with the medical a pair of glasses with the anti glare should take care of the problem. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the responses guys.

I’ll try to pop in to my opticians before Friday and check.
