Been asked if I will undergo an assessment at ND in Stoke.
Asked to go in midweek for Licence check
Saturday for 3hr assessment
Following Saturday for full day assessment
UNPAID
Is this becoming common, and is it worth it for agency work?
Is it even legal to drive when not employed by the Co?
Yes it is becoming more common⌠I donât mind doing assessments unpaid if its just an hour or two - licence check, chat about hours etc, do a walk round then a drive etc - the only problem is whilst doing an assessment Iâm not out working so lose a dayâs pay - speculate to accumulate I guess!!
A full daysâ assessment unpaid is talking the p*ss⌠i bet they get you to do a delivery to âsee how you load / unload, hndle paperwork & interact with the customerâ - in which case I would demand a wage as thatâs working!! Look at all the headlines & uproar about Tesco getting unemployment to âworkâ for dole money, yet itâs ok to get a driver to work for nothing under the guise of an assessment!!
It is legal to drive whilst not actually employed - theyre insurance will cover assessment drives etc.

Any driver that does a dayâs âassessmentâ for no pay is a traitor to the jobâŚyou may never hear from them again and you could be elsewhere getting paid for your labourâŚ
This assessment thing does my head in. I know we are not all in the same boat but as far as Iâm concerned my assessment was with the approved dvla examiner, I passed that so why should I then have to be assessed by someone with no qualification?
I had to do one when I went for a start at ASDA, passed and worked there for 3 years until made redundant, thatâs another thread, went back with an agency only to be told I needed another assessment, ridiculous. The last one I got sent to the âassessorâ told me where he wanted to go and promptly fell asleep, I parked up and went home. Now I tell them I donât do assessments, I have a checkable work history. Rant over.

I think they do them to cover H&S and Insurance.
I had an assessor fall asleep once, he dozed off within about 5 minutes of setting off, so I just drove around for an hour and pulled up in the yard, where he woke up. He then had the nerve to tell me I didnt use my near side mirror enoughâŚ!!!
