Just signed up to an agency who are sending me on my first job tomorrow morning (signed up yesterday). They know I’m a new driver and have driven an 18ton for a week and a half.
Should I expect some sort of assessment for the job tomorrow or will I just get given the keys and to get on with it? If it helps its delivering to spar stores…
Don’t mind tight squeezes and stuff. When I drove the 18ton I was doing multi drops to corner shops in cities. Most of the drops (8-9 a day) involved having to reverse round the back or go down roads with barely an inch either side. I just took my time and voila.
Big Roy:
For Spar you’ll just get thrown the keys and off you pop, expect some really tight delivery points and lots of pulling and dragging, good luck

Wonder if that’s why he’s got the job so quick
Well doesn’t bother me if I’m honest… Although famous last words hey.
Everyone has to start somewhere.

They are always looking for drivers but I’m sure you’ll be fine, as others have said don’t rush it especially when trying to get in to a tight delivery and ignore the idiots leaning on their horns (which they will) just take it easy and get out and look if you’re not sure, another tip is to park up and go into the shop and ask how the other drivers go in because there is nothing worse than struggling to drive into a tight alleyway only to be told that you should have reversed in, let us know how you get on
edited to add it wont be multidrop you’ll just have one or two possibly three shops per wagon

Okay thanks. The agency have given me the route (not in the order but just the drops) and I have 4 in total.

Seems a lot for one wagon unless you’re doing fresh/frozen or are you doing two then going back to base for another two

It’s fresh and chilled food. Doesn’t say anything about going back to depot on my route sheet.

Ah you’re in for an easy day then, nice light cages on four drops, happy days
It went really well. Knackered now. No assessment just a quick walk around the lorry and show me what’s what.
First drop tapped a small bollard bolted to the ground, just slightly pulled out 2 of the bolts into the ground that’s all. Told the manager when I got back but he said don’t worry and they will sort it.
Went down some narrow windy roads and had a panic as did my last drop then had to turn around down back streets when the schools were kicking out. But all in all a good experience, enjoyed it even though I was terrified at points lol.
