Assessment Drive For Job

I applied for a Refuse collection job yesterday and they’ve called me today and want me to do an assessment drive.
Bit nervous now! What gearbox is it likely to be! I knew I’d ■■■■ myself when this moment came, didn’t think it’d be so soon!

Most refuse wagons are full auto these days. If you’ve never driven one before, for chrissakes tell the assessor and they’ll give you a heads-up on which button to press (they really are that simple). The assessment is on the safety/competence of your driving, not whether you know how all the on-board driving aids work.

good post

You will fail if you do not open your mouth and ASK the assessor when you do not know something - they do not want drivers who tray and wing it !

It is not a test - it is likely to be a trusted safe driver who has been there for years doing it with you - It could be an experienced driver who is a member of this site !!!

But they won’t be put off then by me having to ask?
I’ve never ever driven an auto, so don’t really know what to expect.
Go pedal and stop pedal? Lol.

Go pedal and stop?

A lot of them simply have a D to go forward and an R to go backwards with N for neutral

The driver assessing you knows that all drivers do not know everything so how do you think they get to know ? = by asking questions

A good assessor will ask you what you have done before and that is your cue to start asking

Saying nothing and letting the assessor think you do know will simply lead to the assessor thinking you are a numpty

If there are only 2 pedals then the one missing is the clutch

Missing the accelerator or brake pedal and keeping the clutch pedal could be a little problematical

This will be my first job. Only passed in January. Thanks for your advice, I’ll anything I’m unsure of!

It really is simple. I was amazed when I first got in an auto.

If it is an auto, expect a delayed reaction in the accelerator, the one I drove felt like it was filtering the worlds supply of water before putting the power down.

Hi mate

I work for the local authority driving the bin/recycling wagons if you have got an assessment in a recycling vehicle like ours it is a switch on them there is the normal d for drive n for neutral and r for reverse there is also a d and a r with a turtle next to em that is just a crawl gear no one really uses it it jus doesn’t change up from 1st gear.
Good luck mate if its at maygurney in chester that’s where I am the supervisor is sound who normally does the assessment drives so as long as you don’t kill anyone you should be fine

Pm me if you need anymore info

Good luck

John

i did an assesment drive for viola on the bin wagons the guy just took me out around our area for about 1/2 hr to see i could handle the veh was first time I had driven a rear wheel steer and he told me to have a go round the c/p to get used to it first was really relaxed then it was a case of showing me how to use all controls on veh for refuse collection and all h/s guff , dont worry you will be fine
