Asda, Portbury.

Anoter tale of woe.

Had the misfortune of delivering frozen here on friday. Two hours driving to get there from Hams Hall, Birmingham. Six hours waiting to get on the one goods in bay even though they have about 100. Being told by the security guard that you’re not allowed to use the canteen even having been in there last time I delivered here, knowing that all Asda rdc’s let you use there canteen’s which is just as well. This I told him and he still didn’t change his tune. Went in anyway when his back was turned, nice cod and chips. A driver did complain about the delay, the reply, “We’re the customer, if you don’t like it, do one.”

One minute over the road to Celsius First, think I’m on a flyer as it’s my crowd, two hours to take one pallet off and put eight on. Two hours back to Birmingham. Missed the cinema, tickets that I had pre-booked for the friday night. To sum up, 4 hours driving and 8 sitting around for some work-shy to tip your trailer, it’s sooo frustrating. Give me a pump truck and I’d tip it myself (I think lidle do this). There should be a pre set time limit in this industry for them to tip your load before you leave the site and bring it back but that would just be too organised, I bet you chaps don’t get this sort of grief on the continent do ya?

Welcome to TruckNet mate!!

Your story is the same as many stories here, about long delays and being mucked about!
Its makes you think what we as truck drivers could really earn, if only the people at delivery points sort out they own mess!

Hope you are getting paid by the hour!!

 Welcome to TruckNet,Silver Surfer.

Have you considered sending a copy of your post above to www.truckersworld.co.uk

They have an ongoing campaign regarding the treatment that drivers receive daily at ASDA and other RDC’s and I’m sure would be interested to hear details of times in / out ,wrong information from security guard, etc. All drivers complaints are kept anonymous and the more complaints they receive and log from the actual drivers concerned, the more ‘ammo’ they will have to show to the supermarket ‘big cheeses’ when they get to meet them. They have already had some limited success after a meeting with someone from Safeways

I think (and hope !) the management won’t mind me posting this link to Truckersworld as I think their campaign deserves all our support. :sunglasses:

What is the point of promoting an out of date website, that is not updated at regular intervals. That will do nothing to promote the drivers cause!

There is a link to Truckersworld on the front page of this site, so I would be most surprised if there was an objection to your link Deesider.

Welcome to TruckNet UK Silver Surfer.

If you have a look at, that other web site :open_mouth: , I am sure that they will also point out this fact. After 4:30 waiting time, after your book-in time, you are entitled, by law, to a cooked meal, supplied by the company who have kept you waiting. IE, they pay for it. So that security (zb) was not just out of line, he was totally wrong. The company can demand that you are escorted, I think, but physically restraining you would be an assault wouldn’t it■■?

Is this truckersworld aka truckersmoan ?

Also, said site involves getting your wallet out too I believe ?

Is this Brian Tozier bloke on here too? Must be for sure ?

It used to be truckersmoan but was renamed as it was felt that the name truckersmoan wasn’t giving the right image.

Simon, not wishing to dispute what you are saying, but do have any authorative reference for the above. I have heard that Tesco’s will provide a meal after four hours, but I can’t find anything requiring them to do so.

I was recently at Asda, Skelmersdale, and their policy was to allow the use of their canteen after 4 hours on site.

I have found a document produced by the HSE which contains the following

W E L F A R E
Sanitary conveniences and washing facilities
Suitable and sufficient sanitary conveniences and washing
facilities should be provided at readily accessible places. They and
the rooms containing them should be kept clean and be
adequately ventilated and lit. Washing facilities should have
running hot and cold or warm water, soap and clean towels or
other means of cleaning or drying.

Drinking water
An adequate supply of wholesome drinking water, with an upward
drinking jet or suitable cups, should be provided. Water should
only be provided in refillable enclosed containers where it cannot
be obtained directly from a mains supply. The containers should
be refilled at least daily (unless they are chilled water dispensers
where the containers are returned to the supplier for refilling).
Bottled water/water dispensing systems may still be provided as a
secondary source of drinking water.

Facilities for rest and to eat meals
Suitable and sufficient, readily accessible, rest facilities should be
provided. Rest areas or rooms should be large enough, and have
sufficient seats with backrests and tables, for the number of workers
likely to use them at any time. They should include suitable facilities
to eat meals where meals are regularly eaten in the workplace and
the food would otherwise be likely to become contaminated.
Seats should be provided for workers to use during breaks. These
should be in a place where personal protective equipment need
not be worn. Work areas can be counted as rest areas and as
eating facilities, provided they are adequately clean and there is a
suitable surface on which to place food. Where provided, eating
facilities should include a facility for preparing or obtaining a hot
drink. Where hot food cannot be obtained in, or reasonably near to
the workplace, workers may need to be provided with a means for
heating their own food.
Canteens or restaurants may be used as rest facilities provided
there is no obligation to purchase food.

And a little extra note, for the ladies,

Suitable rest facilities should be provided for pregnant women and
nursing mothers. They should be near to sanitary facilities and,
where necessary, include the facility to lie down.

So if the bay is not near to sanitary facilities, ask them where you can lie down.

Again, this is an HSE publication that they will post (single copies) to home addresses. Always useful to be armed with Government material.
