Asda be the way to go Asda Volvo LNG trucks

Is this the new alternative to diesel LNG volvos,Asda seem to be running a lot of
Volvos now on LNG,game changer if big supermarket are converting to LNG trucks is this the future any experiences of these trucks they are not like the old duel fuel ones, that could run on diesel as well big commitment by Asda.

Warburtons…

Had a few LNG trucks that I drove on nights a few times and Howard Tennens has some too.

They don’t really seem to have caught on big time.

There isn’t a widespread infrastructure to support refuelling so it won’t catch on in the open market until that improves. If your trucks happily won’t go out of range and you can add the network into their base then fair enough.

It just makes them fell warm and cuddly, when they talk about their green footprint.

Big trial and investment at Avonmouth, Bald Bloke will probably be along soon to give his views as he drives them. We are still on diesel at our place for the time being though.

They work very well, completely different animal to the old duel fuel rubbish. Most of the time you wouldn’t even know the difference to diesel.

Asda Chepstow are currently changing there entire fleet to LNG.
There’s about 20 brand new ones sitting in avonmouth CDC waiting to go to Chepstow

Yes the old duel fuel where rubbish these must be a different set up altogether,I recall they where a nightmare to fill at some refuelling stations,I see Asda have a road tanker that they refuel from.

Yes completely different system these new ones can’t be run on diesel if the gas system packs up like you could with the duel fuel ones.
in fact the old duel fuel were so bad specially if you were pulling a decker that the first slight incline you came to the gas would stop working leaving you with about a 150L diesel tank to get to Cornwall and back :unamused:

Yes avonmouth have a tanker parked up to refill, just about works ok.

Apparently it took ages for Chepstow to get the required planning permission for there tanker because of the train line running past the back of the site. Might make a mess a derailed train taking it one of those things :smiling_imp:

Yes I drove them for a good while the duel fuel,it used to take a good hour sometimes filling them, you had to vent the gas to get them filled, that must have improved now with this new systems.

There is lots more in Volvo Avonmouth. They are going green .

The only possible reason for big companies to start running LNG is because the fuel bill will be cheaper. There simply is no environmental advantage, as the fuel is basically methane, and even the tiniest amount of leakage is far worse for the atmosphere than diesel emissions.

The cynic in me reckons that this will be the same scenario as years back when folk were opting for gas conversions for their private cars; once enough people had opted for that the government merely raised the duty payments thus negating any savings.

The original Mk1 volvo LNG trucks with the 150ltr diesel tanks where a joke because they kept breaking down, but the newer LNG trucks are much more reliable

Usually a queue of them at Severn Bridge services waiting for the gas tanker so they can refuel.

Gregory’s in Avonmouth have taken on five Volvo FH LNG trucks but pulling heavy loads they won’t do the mileage that’s required. Sometimes having to refuel twice in a shift.

Used to drive dual fuel trucks at London Waste. The changeover was very noticeable as it was like someone had just plonked 20 tonnes on back

Why ?
I have an Iveco 460 NP and it will do 1000 kms before it needs filling, and that’s with plenty of spare kms. Even in Europe where we have much better filling infrastructure it’s still doesn’t do to run out .

Don’t the Ivecos have twin tanks the Volvos have a single tank on them as they are 6x2
