ady1:
got a letter telling me stobarts are now having a declared retirement age of 65, about time someone took the bull by the horns , youve got 70 yr olds working 6 days a week, 67 year olds doing 80 hrs a week, these blokes should be on some coach trips to scarborough, torquay, sitting on the beach with a hanky on there head, not working 15 hrs a day, eventually retireing into a wooden box .itll release up loads of jobs for folks who cant get them.
at last a change thats got to be for the good of the employee .
IF THERE FIT TO DRIVE THERE FIT TO WORK, THEY GET /PAY FOR A MEDICAEL EVREY YEAR.
We have a couple of guys on our firm near retirement age who say they canāt wait to retire, whereas the one guy we have in his 70s says heāll keep going til he canāt pass the medical, keeps him from getting under his wifes feet at home, drives an old XF with a flatbed and just delivers to builders merchants, start at 6am home by 3pm, money not great but the works easy, ideal for him.
End of the day itās up to you wether you want to retire at 65 or not, thatās a long way off for me but at the moment I can see myself carrying on going if I still enjoy it.
When I was driving here in Brisbane, a bloke used to come into our warehouse with a little 3 tonner. He was 92, no itās not a typo. Heād done his time on big stuff and interstate, but just didnāt want to retire. Last time I saw him was about four years ago so heās probably dead by now, but who knows.
By the way, he could still sheet and strap a load, albeit a small one.
I know drivers who worked into their 80ās too, but the government are making noises about raising the limits, they have already raised the womens retirement age to 65, fine for the playtex incendiary brigade, but some people want to retire and enjoy the rest of their short time on earth.
I think that by ESL taking a decision on their own policies it may prompt others to look at the problem before it becomes one.
My comment on the article about the Irlam driver prompting this decision was because I live close to where the accident happened, the newspapers, local TV and radio were full of it.
There are several older drivers who contribute regularly to these forums, Ian, Santa, Mappo and many others, There are just as many who couldnāt wait to hang their keys up and follow other pursuits, paragliding, petanque, scuba diving, or chasing ladies / boys in Bangkok.
Again, if it isnāt broke donāt try to mend it. Let folks make their own mind up, Stobart run a lot of lorries, and I donāt suppose they can afford to give an elderly driver an easier life when there is a trailer that must go, now!
It depends on when you were born when you retire. i was born in '64 and can now not receive government pension till Iām 66, and that may change as successive governments tackle the pensions crisis. From what little I know, when 65 was set as the default retirement age, you only had a few years of life expectancy, of course the average is extended and it has to be funded somehow.
From a womanās perspective I can hardly expect to take money which is funded by other taxpayers so that i can skive off five years earlier or whatever tiemspan. Iāll probably work to the bitter end as I have always financed myself and couldnāt afford to stop working.
