Article link - driver shortages leading up to Christmas

Funny you say that the first As tronic has arrived (and us cave men Are measuring it up for the Eaton TS ) it’s very steep to say the least out of the yard it can’t make its mind up what to do .

There’s definatly a driver shortage here for general haulage /flat/crane draw bar 2-4 nights out a week ,can’t find anyone ,with out wages even being mentioned ,iam beginning to think its too much like hardwork for some .

It is too much like hard work when you can be doing over a grand a week with a curtain sider and 26 pallets and never have to touch the load and sleep in your own bed at home every night. Hell of a lot of hauliers are getting a big wake up call at the moment. :exclamation: :bulb:

Iam not a big night out fan my self 1-2 nights ain’t bad ,(it boosts the weekend activity s) !!

well i thought that untill i saw two drivers starting early this morning at goole, one didnt have a cpc card, and the other only had a 7.5 tonner licence

…how do you know, out of interest?

simple , i saw it happen while i was there , both in a matter of half a hour between each other

Left hand down!:
 The offer has been put to them that I’d do them for my Sunday rate, and it’s actually being considered. :astonished:

If I did anything like that I’d be promptly shown the door, plenty can do it for less:shock:

the dcpc was the best chance drivers had of bringing the industry to its knees and finaly doing something to really improve things for drivers

if every driver said no i am not doing the cpc then there would be hardly any trucks moving today the country would come to a stop

drivers just dont think long term there only interested in what they can get now, its to late now the chance has come and gone as most drivers just went along with it belive me if everyone would of stuck together on this one issue things would of been done over a year ago to make the wages and conditions better for us all

i understand people would be scared of losing there jobs but if everyone stuck to it then what on earth would any company do ? sack them all ? bring in polish guys ? there just wouldnt be enough to fill the gap. already because many drivers like me have called it a day there is a shortage of experienced guys, and there only being replaced with either polish or inexperienced guys
there wouldnt be so many polish guys around if many of the old school had stuck around but they dont like me they look for other ways to make a quid rather than how driving is today

i hope the rates do go up its going to be interesting to see just what happends over xmas this year as there should be a real shortage so who knows firms might start to increase wages to make sure they keep the lads they have now ?

That’s where having a clean driving record with them for the past decade and can-do attitude to any reasonable request pays dividends as they know that you’ll get the job done instead of some thick on a lowly rate that will ■■■■ it up and cost them a 5 figure fine.

My lot don’t think like that though, they’re all about penny pinching & treating drivers like zb, 20 left for greener pastures about a month or 2 ago & they’ve easily been replaced by Agy & the job is getting done (good or bad who knows), kit getting destroyed etc but I guess that’s exactly what they want.

They are short as people are not interested in it anymore, been for a interview today, did a theory test, had a assessment then a chat with a department manager who must of just left school, and yes i could start tomorrow if you like, well i asked how much then , the numpty offered 7.10 a hour, i politely refused , got up and walked out , said manager then had a go at me for wasting there time !!!

Name and shame please so no one else has to waste their precious time. Maybe then they’ll get the message,

samsgrandad:
it wont happen in anybody’s lifetime in haulage to much ime allright jack and stuff the rest of you trucker’s of Britain its time you got a backbone and started to stick together otherwise we are all the same monkey’s working for peanut’s and doffing our hat when the boss say’s do it

It all seems like a case of ‘corporate stockholm syndrome’ and without deviation from the norm, progress is not possible.

Brief description of corporate stockholm syndrome:-
You feel trapped in your job.

You don’t think that there is any way of escape.

You wish that you were somewhere else.

And yet when the chance comes to do something else with your career, you hesitate.

When someone else criticises your employer, you defend them.

When you start to feel like complaining, you don’t and continue to justify your situation to yourself.

When you feel unappreciated, underpaid or used, you imagine (despite all evidence to the contrary) that things will magically get better without the need to take action.

You start to think that maybe the big wide world is scarier than the cage your in and that perhaps a dream job is just that, a dream.

Don’t let that be you.

If you’re unhappy in your current job, start planning your escape.

If your situation is genuinely untenable, it’s time to get away.

Don’t feel sorry for your employer, make a decision, take action and run like hell.

Quite the depressing thread for a new driver!reality check or what!

Own Account Driver:
They are referring to drivers with licences but no DCPC.

I suppose that is the most likely case. But I would have thought that any agency that keeps on sending drivers without the correct qualifications, as in the case cited by holliefabbabe, are not going to be supplying drivers for very long afterwards.

yeah if only we would stick together I stand more chance of kissing the pope’s ring and I don’t mean the 1 on his finger

Can everyone stop moaning about drivers not sticking together to get wages up?
Unless you can actually tell us how you reckon it can be done. It’s a fragmented industry unlike London Underground or the bloody teachers or firemen or the post office…
It’s ok to waste your life wishing for stuff, but I’m a tellin ya, the best days of lorry driving are long gone and it never happened then and it sure isn’t going to happen now.

Yes and no.

I’ve never been better paid, not earning quite as much as i was on the cars but averaged out more per hour than i was on transporters for just over half the hours worked and the job isn’t the graft that the cars were.

Other drivers in good jobs will report similar, there’s a common denominator though, all these jobs are sensibly unionised, which is to say that we do our best to make it work for the company, which reflects in better t’s and c’s for us.

On the downside i detest driving modern lorries, there is no skill whatsover required so no pleasure and little pride to be gained, boring as hell just vegetating behind the wheel doing the odd bit of steering, so in that respect yes the job is no longer what it was.

Drivers were generally better paid when some graft was involved, muck and bullets kept the workshy and inept out of the job to a certain extent.

Even worse, we don’t all work in the SAME industry! Some drivers are in the transport industry, some in the retail industry, some in manufacturing, some in construction…each with different profit margins and market forces. No wonder wages vary so much. Hundreds of thousands of drivers doing many different types of work, and the only thing in common is a driving licence.

On the other hand, the “let’s all stick together” plan worked for British Leyland…

Well - if it helps - personally when looking online for driving jobs, If the hourly rate, nights out allowance, etc… isn’t mentioned up front, I smell a rat and don’t even click it to explore further. There are plenty of ads that mention it all up front (equally, if it is less than £11ph C+E, £10ph C, I snort derisively and keep scrolling too).

No - I mean did you inspect their wallets, to look at licenses and DCPC cards?

I hope you told him that he wasted your time with that rate!
