Artic Reversing

Been training for quite a few days, never really mastered the reverse, test was today and really made a complete mess of it.
Not going to give up, but I have looked at the reversing videos etc etc, I wondered if anyone had any tips or advice they could give me ?

Thanks

Did you have a crib sheet and does the trailer have markings ?

No, I have not got a crib sheet. I cannot seem to be able to put the trailer where I want it, consistently. In the test panic kicked in and then I got it all wrong running out of space on nearside.

Were you taught to use bits on the vehicle and trailer to go by or were you taught the underpinning knowledge so you could do it without using reference bits on the trailer ?

If taught the second way then that allows you to get out of situations better because you will have the overall know how

I have been taught using bits/marks on the trailer, obviously this is not enough. As I said I have watched numerous videos, but putting it into practice yourself, is a different ball game !.
I guess I just need to keep up the practice.

I was also taught using the markings method. Fine for test but real world its pants.

The test is really not anything like reversing in the real world as you never have that set up in a yard and is normally may obstacles to get in your way too , slow and sure is the way dont use throttle just lift the clutch and you will have a managable speed , your instructor will have shown you using markers on veh , but if you can get access to a veh just try going backwards in a straight line till you understand then try little maneuvers to see how the trailer reacts , practice is the key and it will come honest ,

good luck

Whenever I read about someone struggling with reversing, I think get a truck sim and steering wheel. ETS, or better still, Trucks and Trailers. You can practice as much as you like, you will learn some amazing manoeuvres, all in the safety of your pc.
I was doing this for years before taking my test, and the reverse was the one part of my training that was a walkover, straight in everytime.

It seems many LGV instructors are still using the old school methods which is a shame because the other method of using the underpinning knowledge works better and is quicker - that also allows the newbie to apply that in all situations

Rog, do you know anywhere that can offer this type of instruction ? Even just for reversing ?

Data academy - Peter Smythe - JLD - EP - they are just a few which come immediately to mind

Practice makes perfect and the slower you go the better,

Good Luck

Very true ROG most do stick to purely teaching what is needed to pass the test. As you know courses have become a lot shorter since the days of going straight from car to Class 1 when the normal course was 8-10 days and we had loads of reversing time available. Now we allocate an absolute maximum of 3 hours from a C+E course to reversing, and that has to include the coupling exercise. It is better for a candidate to possibly book a couple of hours with a school after passing the test to master the reversing properly before going on job interview assessment drives than to worry about learning something not included in the test.

You don’t say if you took a forward shunt. You are permitted to take up to 2. If you end up too near the nearside edge of the area pull forward to the right back towards the 2 starting cones. Then go backwards with a bit of left hand down so that you can just see the trailer in the offside mirror. Try not to put very much bend in the W&D or artic because you have to end up straight so the less bend you put on the less you have to take off. If you get the rear of the trailer into the box but are not 100% happy with the shape overall, pull forward until the trailer is completely out of the box then its just a straight line reverse home.

At least 2 of those schools only use WnD.

I might be way out on this assumption but reckon the OP wants to finish their training and test on an Artic.

If funds allow and you don’t mind changing to WnD, it may be the easy option to get you the test pass. You can then fine tune your previous Artic knowledge without test pressure.
