What about raising the car driving age to 21 instead?

doesnt matter how old you are you either have it or you dont.

Best statement yet  and very true whether it be use of the controls, knowing the rules, keeping within the rules or having the right attitude, not only for ones own way of driving, but towards others as well.

I don’t know if other driver trainers/assessors on here will agree with me on this but I find that I can tell the attitude/way of thinking, call it what you will, of a driver within an hour of sitting next to them.

rog is there something your not telling us? LOL

I think you’re all judging a book by it’s cover. Not all people at the age 17, let alone 18, are complete ■■■■■ on the road. I’m 17, just passed my driving test, and this is no lie, I’ve seen more ■■■■■ aged 35+ tailgating me dangerously in a 30MPH speed limit car and TRUCKS than any young driver I’ve seen. So I think this is a good turn out without being bias of my age group.

And another situation I was involved in. Coming around a roundabout. Truck driver (late 30’s) pulled out as I was literally on his exit. Had to brake sharply, almost emergency stop. What a complete ■■■■■ He knows how long it takes a truck to get up to 10, let alone 30, especially when loaded. Why pull out? Duhhh… :open_mouth: A car may of been able to get away with it.

And another reason why I think this is good, as people get older, their reactions on the road can lag. Younger people have superior reactions while driving than maybe what a 40/50 year old has. No offence. I know of some old truck drivers falling to sleep at the wheel and causing a fatal crash. Young truck drivers may be able to bring the percentage of such down a notch. I know it’s not always in the news, but when it is, maybe something can be done.

you are right kevinkevin, some do stigmatise the youth, i do sometimes, but only as a joke.
kind of like saying most blondes are thick, when it is completely wrong, as all blondes are thick.

but you do worry me with your comment about the truck driver pulling out when you were in his exit.
he was probably keeping it rolling to save fuel and save a few gear changes, and you panicked.
i’m not trying to be offensive, but that’s the way it seems.

I think if 18 year olds are mature enough then they should be allowed to drive artics, cos at the end of the day it will only be the minority that will take the time and effort, not to mention the money involved, and this should be rewarded. They don’t have to have big fancy wagons from day one but they can aspire to it.

As for experience, if they start at 18 they have plenty years ahead of them to get good at it. Also you could have older drivers mentor the young ones for the first few weeks of thier career lol.

He was stationary. He pulled out as I was coming around the roundabout, very close to his exit to enter the roundabout. He pulled out as if I wasn’t there although I saw him glance at me.

And what about experience? I am not against the age, I am about experience!

There should be minimum a year from car license to truck license, no matter of age!

Totally agree with this.

However for me it should be at least 5 years minimum behind the wheel of a car before you are considered for anything bigger. That would combat the “age problem”.

I Think everyone deserves a chance so i like the idea.

personally i cant wait until im old enough so i can get out on the road, its what i’ve wanted to do all my life and really enjoy

Interesting - I know the jump from car to rigid truck is much bigger than the jump from rigid to artic so I ask this question - why are rigid drivers allowed to take the artic test almost straight after the rigid one without having rigid experience first

because usually if you drive Rigid you already had some experience.

it wasn’t that long ago that you could go straight for your class 1.
i don’t know why they changed it

i think there should be a full 2 week training course at whatever age. without needing to do a class 2 before doing class 1.

you take a test in a C+E and therefore how much experience you have driving a rigid should have no baring of you ability in a artic as it a different test
